Southwest Airlines Looking for Expansion Opportunities
New York Times 07/22/03

c. 2003 New York Times Company

CHICAGO, July 21 — Southwest Airlines reported an increase in its quarterly profit today and said that it would speed the delivery of planes next year as it looked for opportunities to expand.

Southwest, the only major United States carrier to report consistent profits since the Sept. 11 attacks, said that it would increase capacity 6 percent to 7 percent next year and that profits in this year's third quarter would be higher than the $75 million it posted a year ago.

Its larger rivals, meanwhile, are deferring aircraft deliveries and relying on government aid to offset huge losses.

The airline also said it might add a city to its network in 2004, which would be its first move into a new market since it started service to Norfolk, Va., a month after Sept. 11, 2001.

Southwest is also looking to add business where its bigger competitors — strapped with excessive costs — are cutting back. In a conference call with analysts, its chief financial officer, Gary C. Kelly, said the decision by AMR, the parent of American Airlines, to reduce its St. Louis service provided an opportunity for Southwest to expand. "We are interested in doing something there," Mr. Kelly said.

Southwest reported second-quarter net income of $246 million, or 30 cents a share, including $143 million in government aid to offset security costs. That was more than the $102 million, or 13 cents a share, it posted for the second quarter of 2002.

Even without the government aid, Southwest's profit rose 22.6 percent, to $103 million, or 13 cents a share, from $84 million, or 10 cents a share, before one-time items a year earlier. Analysts on average expected Southwest to earn 11 cents a share.

The carrier said it recently exercised options for the delivery of nine Boeing 737-700's next year.

SO, WHY IS THE STOCK PRICE DOWN?

I hear Wall Street doesn't like SWA because they are too conservative.

The P/E is still too high.

The stock prices indicate what investors and number crunchers see the company doing in the next 6-8 months.

It's not like you can invest in a pencil company right before school starts and expect to clean up. These guys (the number crunchers) know more about the company and how it works than all of us will ever know combined.

I don't usually respond to such posts but for some reason today I can't resist. I know I'll regret this.
If by 'number crunchers' you mean analysts (technical or otherwise), I have to say that most analysts don't know their ass from their elbow. If they did, they wouldn't be analysts... they'd be sitting on their yachts pretending to be insightful experts on something else. The same goes for financial reporters who like to pontificate on all the reasons why everything that happened yesterday, happened.
My dog knows more about business than most of these charlatans...and I don't have a dog.
By 'investors' I take it you don't mean those buying UAL stock because"it's got to go back up when they come out of Chapter 11". There are many reasons why the stock price isn't going up...mostly because there are more sellers than buyers at the current level, as well as the valuation, risk/reward, recent run-up etc. I'm not buying at this level either and I can get it at a discount.

Sorry to get of the Stock price track, but does anyone "in-the-know" have any information on the STL deal. Last week American announced it was reducing its flights by 1/2 on Nov 1 at Saint Louis. I have read a couple of articles that SWA was seriously considering increasing its flights there because of AA's reduction. Does anyone know, IF SWA was going to move in on STL, if it would happen this year, or just be part of the 2004 wave. We already know what Herb said last Friday about STL; just wondering if any new news has leaked out over the past couple of days on this issue.

Jeez.....I must have been in the pool too long!!!

When did pilots start using words like "charlatans" and "pontificate"? (phil o'sophers post)

well...i gotta go back to my baby sitting and wait for that class date. I think its gonna come 4th quarter fellow poolies.!!!

southwest growth article

Actually, today in the "Financial Times" or www.ft.com/transport,

the numbers which contradict an earlier post said SW took a one time reimbursement of 271mil security tax. It reported a second Q rise in net income to 103mil. or 13 cents a share.

The company plans to increase dramatically the number of flights out of St. Louis and will take accelerated delivery of up to 92 planes over 2004-05.

It sure looks like the LCC model is here to stay and it's not over yet.

I don't know what the Financial Times said, but the real info always comes from the webcast of qrtly earnings reports that are live on http://www.southwest.com . They also apparently archive them so you can still listen to it if you missed the livecast. Gary Kelly said Net 92 aircraft 2004 through 2006. I think it was

2004 42 new 17 retired 25 net
2005 34 new 5 retired 29 net
2006 38 new 0 retired 38 net

With the 11 more to come this calendar year, that's roughly one new 737-700 every ten days for the next 3 1/2 years. (not factoring in retirements) and netting one additional airplane to the fleet every 12 1/2 days. All the real news at SWA gets reported publicly.

thanks for the info...just a mere coincidence that reading material of the day was this front page story in the business page of London's "Financial Times"..... now if the british screwed up on the uranium deal in africa...who can trust the reporting....

the paper quoted gary kelley, the CFO, who said they'll take 92 planes between 2004 and 2006....
