How long does it normally take from you get the call until your class start date?
Are you able to push your class date if needed (Let's say you have to give your current employer a certain notice).
From the call until your class date, is there anything you have to do at SWA?
When are you actually employed by SWA? Do you sign a contract during the interview or when you show up for training?

Thanks

28 day notice

I had just under a month from call by Asst Chief Pilot to start date, package of study material arrived about 2.5 weeks prior to class. Once notified you have to provide resignation and acceptance letters to SWA, in my case retiring from USAF so retirement orders worked for me. I start 4 Oct so don't have contract details.

This can vary. If your availability is immediate you may go as quickly as 4-6 weeks but unlikely at this point in my opinion because of the number of folks who are awaiting class & since they have slowed slightly in classes. More likely 2-4 months knowing they have a pool of folks sitting around awaiting for class. They will usually give you some sort of idea (beginning/middle/end of 1Q'05 for example for folks awaiting the Oct DB) when they call to say continue. Remember, the call to "continue" is not offering you a job yet. It will run another 4 weeks or so before you're moved from one file to the next but you may or may not get the call that the indepedent background check is complete. That is why I advise calling the PD after 4 weeks to check in with them to see how your package is doing...at that time they will give you a rough idea of when you might expect a class date but that again isn't anything to go quit your day job over with yet. If you need a certain amount of notice tell them at that time and they will take note of that & keep that in mind when they start assigning folks for classes. Just be up front with them, they like that vs. surprises.

Yes you can, ONCE ONLY! Not uncommon to do & it may not even be for the reason you stated...a family issue that can't be resolved, a death in the family, upcoming move that requires you to be there, other issues...again be upfront with them & they'll slip you to the next class. For the rest of this year that may be tough to not have it slip by a month which may not be to your liking but next year the most you'd have to wait for that next class is probably 2 weeks, much mo better!

Not sure what you mean but I believe you are asking "do you as the applicant have any other requirements to accoplish to continue in the process?" If that is your question the answer is no, nothing you can do can speed up the process or is required of you. Again if you haven't heard back after 4 weeks from the "you made it through the DB", then give them a call & check in, otherwise go to Hawaii! It was fun!!!

When are you actually employed by SWA?
When you show up on property for the first day....you get an ID the morning of and can apply your flying privileges that first day along with your family, very sweet.

Do you sign a contract during the interview or when you show up for training?
I believe this was already answered by someone but I'll add my thoughts; the additional letter for you to sign that will be sent to you prior to your arrival will come after the CP calls you. He'll explain it but if not, it is pretty self explanatory, no contract that insures you that SWA will hire you but a legal document showing that Southwest has invited you for training and future employment but it doesn't lock them into you either....if you go postal the next day you won't be welcomed at Southwest on your training date....Southwest can reject you at any point if you fail to maintain the standards you had up to your interview & beyond.

Hope that helps,

Hey Chase, how was the trip to Hawaii?

VERY RELAXXXXXXING.....Highly recommended and thanks to my friends at AA for allowing my wife & I to non-rev...great crews, great spirit...thanks for asking.

Thanks guys :)

Regarding the Interview. Are you notified by phone or letter and how long before.

My questions are due to the fact that I am living abroad.

You are called for the interview; notified by phone that you are "to continue the process" and passed the DB and if not selected you receive a letter in the mail.

Interviews are always scheduled by phone. From time of app to phone call is too difficult to say but a new "sort" is done each month to determine what "flavor of the month" items they are looking for...what may have gotten you an interview one month might not get you one this month....however, there is always a human hand in making selections so it isn't completely left up to the computer to decide who will get the phone call. Hope that helps & clarifies.

Yes, I know that can be anything from months to years. What I really wanted to know is:

:) :) :) Time from phone call (To let you know you have an interview) until Interview :) :) :)

Comming from abroad and having to fit it into a military schedule is my concern.

If it helps, I had five weeks and a day but I think you'd be hard pressed to say that is the norm. I think around four weeks is a better average but I've got a bud who had about two.

I had 3 weeks, but that's only because I chose an earlier date out of a nice long list of interview dates offered. Good luck!

Here's what happened to me:

I got the call from Diane on June 7th and was offered a range of dates and days of the week starting July 6th (Tue - Thurs) and the two weeks after that (Mon - Thurs). I chose Monday the 12th, the middle week offered. So I could have had anywhere from 4 to over 6 weeks notice.

Once the interview was done, the DB met 31 August. I got the continue call the next afternoon, then did the urinalysis the next day. It wasn't until this past Monday, 26 September that I was notified as being officially in the pool. So far, we're looking at 1Q05 class dates, hopefully earlier in that window. I'm told the class date offer should come about 4 weeks prior to class start.

Good luck!!

Thanks

What is the deal with the urinalysis? Where do you do that - Just the local docter? (Just trying to figure out how many times I need to cross the Atlantic. Not that it matters if I land the job :) )

milflyboy,

SWA will call you after the DB to congratulate you and to set up the pee test. They will set up an account with a lab near your house so all you need to do is make an appointment and pee. Although im sure if you get this call you will be so excited you would gladly fly across the country to pee!

Goodluck,
TJ

:) That ain't going to cut it in my case since I live in europe. But you are right I will be more than happy to spend $1000 to go pee in a cup if I get the call :)

... and you have to do it quickly

Milflyboy,

Worth mentioning is that upon getting the Continue call, you have 48 hours to get it done. This is, I assume, to ensure integrity of the test.

When I got the Call, SWA offered a choice of labs at several locations and it was up to me to decide which lab to go to, but it had to be from their list. The one I went to was about a 40 minute drive away.

I wonder, since you're overseas, if there's a way to have it done there since you're already at a military facility. Definitely worth asking WHEN you get the call! :D

Cheers

I can get there within 48 hours. I just have to travel business. So another Grand or two :) $2-3k to pee in a cup :) :) Whatever it takes to land that SWA job

I don't have any other specifics other than my experience... but, when I got the call from the PD on a Monday, I told them I was going out of town for the next 6 days. They said, no prob, just call when you get back and we'll set it up.
