Some of the SWA new hire info says the new hires are expected to bring a flight kit to the first day of class. I'm a military guy and need to know if I should pick one up before class or if we can get a discounted one when we get our uniforms etc.
Just bring a big box. My Sim partner had his roller bag (overnight bag) I had my flight bag. It does not matter, itsjust that you get a lot of books and you'll need to carry it out with something.
You will have plenty of chances to spend money on new bags and things while your there.

Already done. A buddy of mine told me about the site and after soing a little browsing, I had to get out of the "ghost" poolie list. I'll be going down to the 3 FEB class. W8n has all my info. I'm a navy guy that had some "timing" disagreements with my detailer.
Your wife is gonna be way to busy to be shlepping your stuff..Shes gonna be out with the rest of the ladies spending your first year pay at the gift shop and eating lunch..

Check out the Pilot House at www.pilotshirts.com and look at their flight cases. They have two nice ones for around $210. The one without the strap handles is 7.5 inches wide on the outside. A good compromise there. When I flew for UAL, I used a bag that was 8 inches wide and had no trouble fitting it into the -300/-500 series aircraft.
Pilot House also has good shirts for a reasonable price. They carry their own brand and other brands. The Pilot House brand is a great shirt for the money. Has the long tails that don't come out, various pocket options, and full or tapered cuts. (BTW... I do not work for them. Just trying to pass along my $.02 to the folks who are new to the civilian side of the fence.)
Im sure the info about the bag that will fit a UAL 300/500 was helpful for those that are awaiting a class at UAL..I do think the question was for those waiting on a class at the only airline making money..SWA..Ha!!I had to throw that in there..just couldnt leave it alone..Sorry..
Anyway..The 8 inch bags do not work well in the SWA 300/500 and i would highly recommend those thinking about a new bag to get the 7 incher..The side panels may be different from those of the non money making airlines..OOps..Slipped again..
In the SWA 200/300/500 its just about a three handed job and with a Captain,Ops agent,and "A" crawling up your butt you aint got a whole lotta time..
As for the Pilot House shirts..Ive used them for about ten years and have found them to be great shirts at a pretty good price..
I have a 18 1/2 neck and most shirt companys will sell you a 18 inch neck shirt with a 54 inch waist..They offer a tapered shirt that has a 42 inch waist with a 18 1/2 inch neck for us big guys and it comes with the longer tails..
No pilot butts in the cockpit when you try to stow that 8 incher of yours..
On the longer days you dont feel like you are wearing a tent around the middle either..Great company to order from too!
Since we are talking about uniforms..Just another thought about pants..
Most everybody buys the pants from Rhodes..But what ever you do..Dont let them do the cuffs..I have 4 pair and not one leg is the same length as any of the others..Buy them unhimmed and have a local guy you trust do them for you after being fitted with your nice new Justin ropers with the fiberglass shank..

So, from what I gather is that my "flight kit" bag that's 8 1/2"'s wide isn't going to fit? There is absolutely no way I'll be able to get it to fit? Is that what I understand here? Well, I guess it'll be usefull to get those books home on the first day! Back to the drawing board.
What i said was that if you are buying a new bag and have a choice between a 8 incher and a 7 incher go with the 7 because it will be much easier to work with..
I have a 8 incher and i wish i had a 7 because its a real pain to get in and out..But..It still works..
Most of the guys that have the bigger bags have flown the RJ or the bigger Boeings that have a lot more room..
If you already have a $350 bag that you cant take back dont sweat it..Just work with it as i have..
But..When my PNT 8 incher gives up the ghost i will not be getting another..
Wheew, even though it's three years old its new and I don't feel like shelling out cash for another "flight kit." Guess I'll get some "KY" and lub it up real good.
For guys who don't have a brain bag yet, one of the options when you get to the schoolhouse is to buy a bag from the SWA Uniform Store. The store mostly deals with the flight attendant & ground ops uniforms, not ours, but they sell a nylon flight bag with the SWA logo & your name embroidered on it for something like $65. It's light, it's small, everything you need fits in it, and while it won't last for a 20 year career, it's a viable inexpensive option. (And if you're as rough on a bag as I am, buying one of those every 2-3 years will be a cheaper option than replacing a beat-to-%#$@ leather bag every 5-6 years!)
Until you're on the line, ANY size/shape of helmet bag/brain bag/catalog case will work fine hauling books to class & the sim briefing room (you only take the pages you'll need into the simulators), so there is ample time to decide what you want & order it... no hurry at all on that score.
