He also said that had he of known gas was going to be this high he would not have allowed such high pay rates.

Link, please? I listen to GK's releases and comments all the time, and I've never heard him say anything about regrets over pay rates.

From what I know of his mentality, which I'm sure is far less than what you know, I find it highly doubtful that he feels that pilot pay should vary with the cost of fuel.

As you put it, the pay rates were not exorbitant when agreed upon, compared with other carriers. Just because most other majors chose to pull the rug out from under their pilots does not mean that SWA's pay is suddenly unacceptably high.

What Gary said:

Kelly said Southwest's cost to fly each seat a mile, an industry benchmark, rose 4 percent in the first quarter, while revenue by the same measure increased 1 percent. Overall, the price of jet fuel has tripled in the past four years, contributing to a 20 percent increase in expenses, Kelly said.
``We set our pay rates when fuel was 70 cents'' a gallon, Kelly said. ``If we had known then that fuel was going to be $2.10 a gallon would we have done something different with labor rates? Maybe.''

It's a considerable leap from "Maybe." to what was claimed by YPF.

SWA recognizes that the time has come to accept a second aircraft type in order to gain significant growth quickly. They can target AAI 717s to specific markets with the thought that they will eventually replace them with new 737s or a 737 follow-on.
I'll gladly take a staple job to the SWA list... but I'm still just an FO.

I will stir the pot a little:

-RNP ready 717's that could be added to the fleet or replace aging -300's
-Winglet equiped NG's
-A few empty sim bays at the training center
-New York
-Atlanta
-2 in house unions

SWA buys Airtran and Midwest. They negotiate with Boeing to take on all of their new 737s and swap out all the 717s. Quickly they regain their simplified fleet.

At least in my world that is what will happen.

If experience has taught me anything......

Whatever happens with SWA it will be not what everyone is talking about but somethintg totally from left field. Not ,AirTran Frontier or Alaska or anything else I've seen here other than maybe Ryan.

It should be fun to watch.

what's ironic is AAI's pursuit of MEH has made their books (with the combined company) pursuable.....

i'll happily take a SWA contract with a MKE or MDW domicile.

I'll gladly take the SWA contract, but I'm going to be ticked if they take away the moving map display and replace the tapes with simulated steam gauges in my 737.

Heard from a friend at the GO what the huge announcement is gonna be:

Apparently we're switching back to plain peanuts from honey-roasted.

Now who could have ever seen this coming..............?

Theres always BIG announcments: new holiday tie choice, latest gate decorating winner, newest electic aircraft tug, etc...

So after we buy WestJet, will we start serving Molson on the airplanes?

Sounds good to me!!
