Networking does not help at Southwest until the DB unlike other carriers where you need it to get the interview. That said, from my understanding what they look for is how well you mesh with the culture and feedback from interviewers on that subject. In addition what you can do to increase your odds is befriend or really get to know someone who has the ear of one or more of the CP's and have them acquaint the CP with your name so they go into the board already thinking you are a good idea. Until Oct when LAS opens there are 7 voting members and I can only imagine it would be a huge help to have say 2 or 3 already know who you are etc... I also think the VP of Training goes to the DB to give input but do not believe he gives a thumbs up or down. This process is a mystery but we all do know the chiefs meet and vote on who they want. Get someone to bend a few of their ears before the board on your behalf and you are set unless you screw up the interview. I recommend someone senior who has credibility with his or her base chief and is known around the company and or training dept, such as a check airman! Contrary to popular belief every record goes to the DB, some albeit with better chances than the others based upon the interview. I hope it works for you, this is exactly what I did and it worked for me (successful through March DB). I ended up meeting a check airman back in fall of 2005 and cultivated the relationship and we ended up becoming good friends. I wish everyone the good luck that I have been blessed with. Cheers, klr
