What can a new hire expect of the following (assuming I were to get hired):

Base out training and approximately how long?

How long before you could hold BWI or MDW (live in ALB and these would be the closest bases)?

How long on reserve?

Oak or MCO out of training. About 1 month.

About 2-3 months.

3-4 months.

A newhire buddy of mine is in MCO - no reserve yet for him.

Base out training and approximately how long?--->Bet on OAK

How long before you could hold BWI or MDW (live in ALB and these would be the closest bases)?--->IF a bunch of New Hires come in behind you, look at 1 month in OAK....if not...then , longer

How long on reserve?--->IF a bunch of New Hires are hired behind you, look for a couple of months...if not...then, longer[/quote]

I guess that about covers it

328 dude,

When does a new hire find out where his temporary and then permanent base will be once training is finished? Is IOE and hard line conducted in temporary base? Thanks dude.

Hack

Once he gets off his hard line month, he will be.:D

He was my union brother. You think the SWA/FO would not understand this?

You will bid for your base once you start training. Depending on where you want to be placed, you could be based there right off the bat, or it could take a few months. For instance, if you want OAK or MCO, chances are you would get it right off the bat depending on your age in your new hire class. HOU, PHX, MDW or BAL could take about 1-2 months. DAL is about 5 month's. In any case, you will find out your temp base while in training. Each month the base awards come out, you will find out then what your permanent base will be. I have no idea how LAS will shape out.

Here's a timeline of a buddy of mine.

Started class in January.
Awarded a temp base of MDW for March.
Awarded OAK for April. He wanted MCO, but could not hold it due to his relative age of his new hire class.
Awarded his first base choice MCO in May and is on reserve this month.
Awarded a hard line in MCO for June.

Senior guys in each class are getting MCO right off the bat bypassing OAK all together.

Like I said, 1-2 month's before you get to the base you want unless your choosing DAL. It's running 5 month's right now. Most guys that want DAL but can't hold it go to HOU. Plenty of flights to get home on, plus the late night cargo runs from AirNet Lears and other sources that fly in the middle of the night.

Hope that helps. Good Luck.

Is there any base lock once you are awarded a base. If I am fortunate enough to get on at SWA I would like to be based out of OAK, then after a little while transfer (how little depends on when/if I get hired) to BWI.

Thanks

No base lock, but if growth stops, so do vacany bids (ala 9-11). Hiring typically slows down in the fall, so you could get stuck for a couple of months, but I wouldn't worry. These are both pretty junior bases and growth appears to be in the cards for quite some time.

In as far as these other questions: how long on reserve, or to hold a base etc ... it is a moving target. It depends how much hiring is done behind you. I sat reserve for 11 months 2003/2004 and lots of guys were stuck commuting for that long. Bet even in that time frame, by the time you were off of probation you could hold a line in any base.

Keep in mind LAS is opening up and that could change things dramatically. I could see sending new hires to LAS until it gets up to speed. Feel for the poor guys who have to commute into there.
