As part of the "big news" today was the announcement of some route segments.

The Texas Two Step cities were largely unaffected. (sorry General)

The BIG thing I noticed was Denver. Several additional flights to existing cities and several new Denver routes including SEA (4 X per day), ABQ (3 X per day), OKC (2 X per day) and AMA (2 X per day).

No city pairs were eliminated and the vast majority of lost flights are to/from cities with muliple flights per day.

I think there is a storm brewing on the Front Range and it looks like it's aimed at F9 - dammit.

Southwest aims for business traveler

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Southwest Airlines Co. on Wednesday gave a peek into its plans to make the discount carrier more enticing to business travelers, one of several tactics to accelerate profits undercut by rising fuel costs.
The Dallas-based airline said it plans to enhance its Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program and revamp its fare and seating structure -- two areas that have come under criticism from customers. It will unveil those changes in the fourth quarter.
"The number one complaint that [Southwest] President Colleen Barrett has gotten from customers is the boarding and seating process," said Southwest CEO Gary Kelly in a conference call with journalists, adding the boarding process probably turned away some business customers.
Southwest differs from most airlines by foregoing assigned seating, instead lumping passengers into boarding groups based on their check-in times. The airline's signature seating arrangement drew raves for years from customers, as it dovetailed with the carrier's frequent short flights and its no-fee flight changes. But the structure has encountered resistance with some travelers willing to pay more for the ability to choose an aisle or window seat, for instance.
By the end of this year, Southwest will have made changes to its technology to allow for assigned seating, Kelly said.
In addition, the carrier has encountered some roadblocks in winning new business customers when it enters a market dominated by large competitors "because it's hard to get customers weaned off other frequent-flyer programs," Kelly told journalists. About 40% of its total traffic comes from business travelers, he estimated.
A greater focus on business travelers is one of the methods Kelly said the airline will deploy to increase profits, which have been hurt by a 20% rise in unit costs over four years, largely due to rising jet fuel costs.
Southwest also plans to cut its capacity growth in the fourth quarter, trimming an increase in available seat miles to 6% from an earlier plan of 8%. It is eliminating 39 roundtrip flights from its existing flight schedule, including two daily round-trip flights between Baltimore and Los Angeles, one daily round-trip flight between Baltimore and Oakland, and a Philadelphia-Los Angeles direct flight.
The company said it will try to add over $1 billion in revenue by 2010 from these initiatives, with profits standing to gain about $10 million in the fourth quarter, he said.
"We are trying to adjust to much higher energy costs," he said.

Anybody catch the part when Gary said that acquiring an airline without 737s is not out of the question or something like we would be able to convert to one fleet type... etc..

Gary was quoted the other day saying that SWA had aquired other airlines in previous decades and wouldn't rule it out in this one.

Our FA'S understand that when we first started flying hou-dal they were just as quirky as ther are now, to day it toilet paper yesterday it was booz who knows what it will be tomorrow. If you hate it so much then stay away.

GK is as much a showman as a business man. You can't hang on to everything he says or you'll just run around in a circle chasing your tail. GK basically is just saying that nothing is off the table. I wouldn't expect the "true" acquisition plan to be announced in this format or even give much notice.

I just don't see SWA buying any airline in this environment, wouldn't be prudent. I think GK is trying to push the next consolidation by throwing chum in the water, SWA would benefit from less capacity without taking on the debt.

What we are seeing is GK dropping flares and watching everyone fire at them while his ship keeps on climbing and turning.........

Simply my point that some customers will stay away for the reason I've stated. A mini of jack is a far cry from a box of tissues for guessing where you are flying over. I certainly won't question the fa's service when it comes to leisure customers since that is proven excellent. However if GK wants the revenue up from the business crowd then it has to be recoginized that 'fun' games are an irratent to those customers.

My GF used to live in SAT and traveled alot, so by default she had to fly you guys to get direct flights. The games and attempts at humor used to drive her nuts when all she wanted was quite to get her work done and then pass out. She's far from the only business grind type I've heard gripe about this.

maybe he is the one with his arm around the other guy..............

No doom and gloom here.....we be fix'in to have a party! Not just any party..........a Texas Party!!!

This afternoon, our Employee military heroes will deliver our 500th aircraft to Dallas just in time for the "Let Freedom DING!" party. The party starts at 4 p.m. and will be held in the parking lot of Headquarters. The party will go on, rain or shine! Keep in mind, there will be a tent covering much of the party area.

In addition to a heartwarming welcome for our military heroes, there will be hot dogs, beer, and a great band! Vendors also will be onhand selling merchandise, including t-shirts and commemorative mugs.

As part of the LUV Rations Program, we will be collecting donations at the party as well. For the party only, you may donate any of the following items, regardless of what city it is assigned to. However, please remember when donating locally, only donate your designated city item.
  • Foot Powder
  • Razors/Shaving Cream
  • Hard Candy
  • Sunscreen
  • Wipes
  • Soap/Deodorant
  • Crew Socks
  • Toothbrush/Toothpaste/Dental Floss
  • Powdered Drink Mix
If you plan to attend, see you at the party! :D

you know i see where you are coming from but just the other day I had people tell me how much they like the fact that we have fun at work. The bussiness traveler prob. would not like it (i think otherwise but oh well) so i think you have to find a middle ground somwhere.

Naah, he'll be there....He's the one handing out the towels in the bathroom!

Hey,

At least I'm not the one toweling off their balls or on my knees helping the Navy guys out wearing my double breasted coat.

Just because you are a business person doen't mean you want to be treated like ********************. I think there is ample opportunity to have fun while not making this place look like a carnival. Well, no more of a carnival than Colleen has already let it become.
