Available from Skinner Sights, you'd need to add some way to purify and carry water as well as a Bic lighter and some tinder good tinder and a couple of candles (the Far North is frequently quite damp if not frozen solid!). For Bear Country I'd lean towards the .45-70 option but from a rifle the .44 Magnum will be fairly good with hard cast lead bullets.

Er, don't know of a Smith 406, maybe a 460 Mag? Those are monsters, that cartridge has a pressure limit the same as a Winchester 308 rifle cartridge, for me that's too much for a handgun-call me a wimp. I held one once, those X frame revolvers should come with wheels! That cartridge would make a really good thumper round for a lever action rifle though...
