You may not have seen my response in your other thread since it turned into 6 pages of people arguing...

I substitute teach on the side. Schools in my area pay $50 to $80 a day. Extremely flexible. An automated system calls you, press 1 for yes, 2 for no, in a nutshell. Substitutes are hard to get, most school districts are short on subs. I get called everyday. Easy money.

stay married or never get married. that should help out.

Marry a stripper.

Although I was advised by a pilot colleague of mine once 9who would have known), "Radar, don't ever marry a stripper."

Oh yeah, years before this current mess, I caught a USAir jumpseat. The grey-haired captain was pleasant as can be, offering me a first-class seat, introducing me around and asking after common friends.

Once settled into my leather seat, he called me up to the cockpit.

"Radar", he said, "Have you ever thought about being your own boss in a home-based business?"

He got my home address and phone and hounded me for a while to sell supplements.

So that's a good idea: use your jumpseat to force riders to purchase Amway from you on each leg, and to sign up for your MLM opportunities.

On one side, the guy was a chump, but on the other, I got a first-class ride so who am I to complain?

I teach college classes online for the University of Phoenix on the side. You have to have a Masters Degree, but it has really helped out while I have been on furlough status with NW. I'm making about $20K a year with them (about the same amount that a NW pilot would make on first year pay). I spend about 6 hours a week to keep my classes going.

Substitute teaching is good. I used to do it for $80/day. It was the hardest job I ever had though. I lost a fourth grader once. :(

Real estate is common, but it takes money to get started.

I currently work part-time for an interview coaching company. It is easy and fun, with a flexible schedule.

Agreed. ERAU is always sending me snailmail about teaching for them. I know a lot of folks have done the distance Master's with them, and as Backer said, its easy money.

stay married or never get married. that should help out.

Heyas,

Sometimes staying married is outside of your control. I've seen many occations where super guys/gals who have done everything right, and have been the quintessential perfect spouse, have been subjected to a marriage gone bad.

People sometimes hit a certain age and flip out, feel trapped, panic or just go plain crazy, and woe betide the unlucky spouse trapped in this situation.

Please, please, please, if you heed no other advice, GET A PRE-NUP agreement before getting married. If he/she won't sign, then DON'T DO IT.

I've seen instances of spouses, who were the nicest, most pleasant people on the planet suddenly become your worst nightmare. People who say "ahh, he/she would never do something like that" have suddenly been faced with a vindictive spouse. Imagine having to take leave off of work to deal with a divorce for six months to a year.

Pre-nups don't have to be complex or punative, just a simple statement of facts. These days, people are getting married at an older age, which means both parties are bringing assets to the table.

You might say "well, you're planning to fail". Well, we all train for engine failures, but how many do we really have?

Anybody find any supplemental income out there thats legit??

I got into the Oil and Gas business around 4 years ago. I search for properties all over the country that look good geologicaly for drilling! I purchase the property then lease it back to the major production companies! Lease bonus can be over $100,000 to start! The production companies drill for oil and natural gas and the leases pay me royalties every month! It is sweet! There is nothing as great as walking to your mailbox and picking up those checks that I don't have to work for! You should check it out!

I work at Hollywood Video...Free movie rentals too. Nothing more humbling than running a cash register. Dang this flying career.

Oh yeah I have a Physics degree with a math minor, so I tutor high school kids on the side as well, but it is not as fun as the video store.

I worked out a deal with Flightinfo.com....I get $.03 every time General Lee posts. It has worked out really well but there has been an unfortunate accident because of it. Yesterday, while climbing a pile of fifty dollar bills, I lost my footing and fell. I dislocated my hip.

Holding the line

If we as pilots demand livable wages, we would not be having this dissusion.

I agree. I'm doing my part. I'm defering recall until our MEC will get longevity credit for our furloughed buddies. Unfortunately, I don't think they care and there are too many junior pilots willing to work at $29 an hour. I can't and I'm not. Best of luck!

I bring in about $4500 a month after taxes and insurance from a govt pension. It only took 28 yrs working nights/days and weekends to get it.
