I will soon be instructing an Instrument student in his dad's Cherokee 140. What is important for me to know about getting a letter of subrogation with his dad-the owner?

I have some base knowledge on the subject, but I'm looking for advice from you freelance CFI's and anyone else with pertinent info.

Thanks all.

What you want to do is ask "dad" to talk to his insurance agent. You and he want to make sure that

1. He is covered in case of an accident while you are giving his son instruction.

2. You and the son are covered in case of an accident while you are giving instruction. This make take several forms including having you and/or his son listed as "named insured." (Important: "named pilot" is not even close to the same thing)

3. The insurance company will not subrogate against you in the event of an accident while you are giving flight instruction

Whatever you do get, have a lawyer review the paperwork. I know this is shocking, but insurance companies and insurance agents have been know to be, well, incorrect, when telling CFIs that they have nothing to worry about.

You may not get all. And none of these is a substitute for having your own insurance that covers your activities as a CFI.
