I have a CFI interview coming up, and I'm in need of knocking off a bit of rust beforehand (I've only flown once in the past 11 months). I'm on a bit of a budget, so I'm looking at getting checked out in an old crusty '82 C152 around here to get some practice in.

Thing is, I've never flown a C152, and the interview flight will be in a C172 (which I've flown many many times). How similar are the two aircraft as far as basic private/commercial maneuvers are concerned? I doubt they'd be too different, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot beforehand.

I'd try to find a cheapo 172 to rent, but it seems like everyone around my area has upgraded to 2000+ models. I can't find a damn one for less than $130/hour.

I trained on a 152 and lately (the last three weeks) I've been flying a 172. The V speeds are slightly different, obviously, and I think the flap position indicator might be in a different spot. Otherwise, I can't think of a difference that means anything. My "transition" to the 172 was swift and effortless.

I'm only a private pilot, so I have no idea what you commercial guys go through.

the speeds are close....about 5 knts slower than a 72. i find that theres not as much flare. the flap indicator is in the same place, if the needle is still there, its even the same gray lookin paddle, but you probably wont find the notches there and you will have to look at the indicator.

Vr - 50
Vx - 54
Vy - 67 cruise climb 70
best glide 60
Vfe 85 (same) unless youre used to 10 below 110
final speed 60 + 1/2 the gust factor 60 usually works well
short/soft field apprch speed 54, yes 54

better yet go google a POH

The biggest difference you'll find is that the 152 doesn't exactly like to climb. If you can fly a 172, you can fly a 152 no problem. The first time I flew a 152 my biggest problem was trying to fly final approach at the same speed as I did in a 172, which doesn't work in a 152 at all.

By the way, there are no stupid questions, only smart-alec answers.

If you have flown a C172, you shouldn't have much trouble at all.

Goodluck
