Anyone have any helpful study tips before heading to HPA? I'm starting in late March and would appreciate any tips, that in hindsight, would have prepared you better. Thanks in advance for all that can help.

Supposedly the courseware says you need to do something like 60 hrs. of pre-study, but that is completely overblown. Work on the stuff you'd work on for any aircraft: memory items, limits, flows. If you have that stuff down then the rest is cake.

Ditto the gouge about knowing flows, limitations, memory items. If you have this stuff down cold you will have much more fun.

As far as much how much to prepare, your background makes a big difference. If you coming from the civilian side the 60 hrs is probably excessive, especially if you have Boeing experience. If you are coming from the military, however, comparatively more will be new so you will appreciate the extra time before hand. The HPA flows are pretty lengthy and if you show up without having started learning them you may have a more painful couple weeks. Don't listen to the audio CD they give you in the car - you will fall asleep at the wheel (trust me). But the pre-flight video is a very good way to start learning the flows.

But, like already mentioned, the keys are: FLOWS, LIMITATIONS, MEMORY ITEMS.

+1 also study the Oral Prep (4 or 5 page paper) they mail to you. If you know that cold, everything will come together in class. They really prep you so don't worry, they really have it down to a science.

All I did was listen to the tapes/cd when I drove to Dallas. Anything else is overkill.

Remember, it just a type rating factory.

Good luck.

Yes but that being said, they don't GIVE you a type. You do have to work for it. Follow what they outline and everything will be fine.

CD's - dry but worth it

I found that the CDs were dry, but 95% of the oral came directly from them. Liten to them when driving back and forth to work and if you drive to Dallas. Good luck.

Has anyone ever heard of some one not leaving with a type rating from HPA?

Just asking while I'm snowed in at my crash pad.

Two guys in my class had to do some extra work because they were not ready for their oral. One had too many family things going on during ground school and had a hard time studying and the other did ground school a month beforehand and didn't study enough before he came back. They were identified during the oral prep and pulled for additional training. They did get their type in the end. I don't know if they were charged for additional training but I would assume that they were. Both very good and sharp guys BTW, just wern't ready at the time.

Thanks for all the good info. I was literally mapping out the number of hours I had on overnights to see if I could get the 60 hours in. I'll get the flows, limitations, and memory items down and have fun.

Judging from your background, you will not have trouble with systems or the oral. Just show up having memory items, limits, and flows down. Be ready in the sim though because the 737 will seem like a lead sled compared to the Dash 8. I swear those DHC - (insert #) aircraft perch instead of land. They look like alot of fun to fly.
