Student Pilot Certificate question

Have a special situation with one of my students. He started flying in 1992 and got up to solo in a Piper Cub. Has 2 hours of solo in the pattern. I've gotten him back up tp speed in a 172. Do I endorse the students old Student pilot certificate for the new airplane of have him get a new Student pilot cert/Medical ? ? I remember a examiner mentioning something about this during the CFI oral which made it sound as though I should endorse the old one. Thanks for the help guys/gals

A student pilot certificate is only good for 2 calendar years, his is expired and no longer valid. The medical is also only good for 2...it's also expired. (In 1992 they were only valid for 2 years).

He needs to go see the doc and get a new medical/student pilot certificate. No question about it. Even if the certificate was still valid, he would need a new medical before solo anyway.

As others pointed out, the old one is expired.

What you may remember hearing that sounds sort of like this is that if the old one is =already= properly endorsed for solo student privileges, there's no need to re-endorse the new one; the student should carry both the expired and the new one.

That doesn't apply to you. Student pilot solo endorsements are make and model certificate. So you are giving a brand new endorsement which should be on his brand new student pilot certificate.

and you are a cfi? geez I knew that at student pilot cert was good for only 2 years when I was a student!! Perhaps a look at part 61 would be in order.

Even if the Student Pilot Certificate is beyond 2 years old, as mentioned above, it is still a matter of record and should be kept along with the new one. Of course, this is only if it contains a solo endorsement for a particular make and model that you plan to solo him in. The 90 day currency has to be endorsed every 90 days in his logbook. The Student Pilot Certificate is a one-time endorsement.

NYCPILOT is right but I want to put my two cents in just so it's clear as to what is needed. The student pilot needs an endorsement on a valid student pilot certificate for the airplane he plans to solo. He was able to solo a Piper Cub and has started training again in a Cessna 172. As his CFI, you have to show that you have given him training in the 172 by endorsing the student pilot certificate and logbook that he is competent to solo the 172.

Although, in the context of the question, it's probably a good idea to give a new one.

Let's take a look at 61.87(b):

Aeronautical knowledge. A student pilot must demonstrate satisfactory aeronautical knowledge on a knowledge test that meets the requirements of this paragraph:
(1) The test must address the student pilot's knowledge of -
(i) Applicable sections of parts 61 and 91 of this chapter;
(ii) Airspace rules and procedures for the airport where the solo flight will be performed; and
(iii) Flight characteristics and operational limitations for the make and model of aircraft to be flown.

No, there's no expiration date, but

(i) has changed a lot in the past 13 years
(ii) has changed if it's a different airport and may have changed =a lot even if it's the same airport.
(iii) will change with new types of aircraft

Not to mention that the student probably lost mot if not all of the knowledge information he once had.

I've never seen any guidance on this, but arguably, a solo knowledge test given in 1992 at Podunk Airfield in a J3 Cub might not be legally valid in 2005 near Washington DC in a Cirrus SR20.

Legalities aside, it's probably ago idea to give a new test.

Legalities not aside, it is very definitely a legal requirement for a solo knowledge test if you are endorseing a new airplane or a new airport. The pre-solo knowledge test must address airport operations at the airport at which the solo flight occurs, and the test must address operating characteristics of the additional airplane.
I know this is one of the most skipped-over requirements going, but that's the way I read it.
