I was wondering if anybody has any information regarding deferment on your student loans. I leave for Navy OCS in the Fall and was told that you could defer your loans for your time in service. I am in the process of consolidating them now, but wanted to know if anyone had any information.

Thank you,
BWatz

I think its actually 4 years (thats what I got). Give Sallie Mae a call or check their website for the most recent scoop on military deferments.

Thanks guys. I've heard so many different things I don't know what to believe. The companies don't seem to know what's going on. One company said that I could defer them for my entire service. Hopefully I will find out something soon. Thanks again..

I don't know what the current policy is, but when I was commissioned (1995), my loans were deferred for three years.

I was just messing around at Salliemae.com looking into this issue and it appears that military deferments no longer exist. They were available for up to 3 years until 1993 according to that website (Toro above apparently got one in '95 still). But in any case, now they look to be a thing of the past. It'd still be worth asking a loan counselor though.

BWALTZ,

I went to Navy OCS in 1995, and I got a three year deferral on my student loan. This was an excellent benefit which I highly recommend taking advantage. Interest free loans are cool.

Right after I got commissioned, I did the paperwork at PSD right there at NAS Pensacola.

Drop me a line if you have any questions.

Good luck
