When I saw the post, I had assumed that the family had called a press conference to vilify the evil airline had mistreated them.

Upon actually viewing the information before coming to a conclusion, neither the family nor the news crew had anything bad to say about the airline.

They rolled the dice, crapped out, and were dealing with their circumstances with dignity. They stated unfortunate facts without whining or blaming. Remain calm, carry on. Good for them.
Sure hope someone loses there pass privileges over this.
Why?

If it's true, it's good to hear that general human decency and kindness prevailed and those with the means were willing to provide for those in need.

I will be showing this video to everyone who asks for buddy passes. I tell them time and again that ticket prices are so cheap these days that saving sixty bucks isn't worth it.

Wow...this is why I hardly ever give away buddy passes. One or two adults traveling with a flexible schedule with resources if things go bad...fine. A family of 4 with no money...REALLY? With the loads nowdays I don't even bother to travel standby with my kids at my priority...if they were at the buddypass priority level...forget it.

As additional info from a JB guy, SLC is the absolute worst place to try and non-rev from. JB has only a couple of flights there and they are there to support the SLC call center, So all the call center employees use those flights to travel. No crewmember in their right mind would attempt non-reving or buddy passes there.

What a bunch of white trash. In 30 seconds I went to UAL and priced tickets for SLC to IAD direct on 8/23 at 9:41am for 3 adults. Price comes to $2,615. Suck it up and slap it on your card then pay it off in 6 months. You gambled and lost. And if you don't have a credit card for emergencies or a card with balance left then you really are white trash.

They should have spent 1 day trying to get on flights. When that didn't work after the last flight left on day one they should have done the above then got a hotel room for 80 bucks then back to the airport the next day with confirmed tickets and been home by dinner on day 2.

What a bunch of white trash. .
I am the first to call out White (or any other shade of) Trash.....
However, in my estimation, this was just a typical family who were caught in an unfortunate situation and were dealing with it. Feel free to link to the video where they were being all ghetto, were blaming JetBlue for their plight, demanding someone rescue them, cooking meth in the terminal, or behaving in any other 'white trash' manner. This family could be could be your cousins if you were stupid enough to tell them that standby travel would work out.

You are assuming that they knew how the airline world works. Most "civilian's" don't. They thought they had a decent shot and the (apparently reservation agent) they got the tickets from has never actually traveled, and didn't properly prepare them for this jam.

This family is (presumably) hard working, decent, folks were told things would work out. The people that told them things would work out were either ignorant or wrong.
This family isn't blaming others for their plight, they aren't declaring that JetBlue owes them something...They are just some honest people who have done nothing wrong, and have (through no fault of their own) found themselves at the mercy of a system they don't Fully understand, and need some help.
Reports are that their fellow citizens, who have the financial means and better understanding of the system, have provided for this family's welfare without causing insurmountable stresses on their own personal finances.

There's a parable in this.

BTW.....$2600 bucks? Not exactly chicken feed. That's a full month's pay for many families. The fact that you think that not having a credit card you can just throw $2600 bucks on (like it's no big deal) is testament to your fortunate circumstances. Yes, I said circumstances. We were all lucky to be born into opportunity. If you think you've worked harder than a guy (who lost the lottery and decided to get with the program anyway) who crossed a desert and lives on the fringes of society to clean your toilet/wash your dishes/pick your produce for a couple of bucks an hour doesn't work harder than any of us ever have, you are wrong. I encourage anyone who calls illegals lazy, or that claims that hard work is all it takes to make it in America, to do a couple of days of their work for their pay.

Those people you see every day...That flight instructor, that waitress, that barista, everyone working at the airport pushing wheelchairs, making burritos, pouring coffee, skycapping bags, emptying the trash, zambonining the floor, the maids cleaning your room, the van driver..........they are the 'white trash' who have families just like yours but don't have a credit card they can just throw $2600 bucks without causing stresses on their personal finances.
Most of the world doesn't live in your bubble.

When you call to make an airline reservation you probably picture the agent at the other end of the line sitting in cube farm. For many airlines that may be accurate. For Jet Blue, however, it is not. All of Jet Blue's reservation agents work from home. In a CBS Evening News story one reservation agent, Suzy Dall, talks about how this arrangement works for her and Jet Blue CEO David Neeleman talks about how it has worked for the company.

So all the reservations agents in SLC are work at home individuals. They are required to attend a monthly meeting at the JETBLUE office but work at home. All of them.

Just because an airline flies into a city does not mean it is for local employees. Airtran had a call center in Savanah, GA and pulled out, leaving all the reservation agents one choice to drive to another city or to ATL to fly.

Very well said. I don't get how anyone can fault this family in the least. They are just trying to do the best they can with what they have. Not everyone understands non reving like us, airline employees.
