Okay, I'm moving to Houston in late August for a Certified Flight Instructor job. I'm checking into moving prices and I'm probably going with a 14 ft. Ford diesel and my Mustang on a trailer for the move.

First, is there any cheaper respectable companies to rent from?

Second, what kind of fuel mileage can I expect from the diesel pulling my stang?

Third, is this move tax deductible? I know it's true if your doing a transfer for a job, but what about if this is your first job out of college?

I moved twice towing my car behind me, and it isn't a bad deal at all. I rented from Budget Truck Rental both times, and got rates lower than Ryder or UHaul for equipment that was in as good or better condition.

Count on 10 MPG or so ... that seems to be about all I got. You'll spend a fortune on fuel, but such is life.

As to tax deductibility ... maybe. Check the IRS web site for information. I don't have a definitive answer for you. Save receipts just in case.

Enjoy Houston ... it is a pretty good place to live, and you're starting at the right time ... after the brutal summer is mostly over. Choose wisely where you live, and you should have a pretty good time. I enjoyed living there once upon a time.

Good luck, and if I can be of help, PM me.

Moving

Your moving expenses might not be tax deductable because you are not "established" in your profession. Ask your tax advisor.

How much stuff do you have to move? I was a fairly typical pilot when I was in the business, i.e. I owned no furniture and could move most of my possessions in my car. Not typical enough that there weren't things that I couldn't get in my car. For one move I rented a U-Haul roof topper. I packed stuff in cardboard boxes and stowed them in the topper. For subsequent moves I just shipped those items by way of a moving company (By that time I had a nicer car which I didn't want to junk up.). Unless you have a ton of stuff, you might consider packing as much as you can in your 'Stang, driving it to Texas, and shipping the rest.

Good luck with your move.

I surely envy you, I miss Houston alot and had a great time in my little over 2.5 years there. Flew a trip into there last and man I wish we flew more trips there. There is so much to do in that city, I cannot remember single one time where I was "bored" and didn't know what to do with myself to keep occupied.

Have fun

take your students into GLS & EFD for approaches (those were two of my favorites)

what part of the city are you staying in?

Thanks guys! I'm from Houston born and raised. Well the Woodlands. I've been away for college and miss it quite a lot. The Job is at Hooks airport. The flight school is owned by a friend of the family, who's also a CAL pilot. Once again proves it's who you know in this industry. I've got a decent priced apartment in my sights in Tomball, about 10 min away. :D
