Huh?

The article says it will be the worst solar flares since the 1800's. How accurately were scientists measuring solar flares back then? How do they know this???

"Worst solar activity in 10 years" or "20 years" I could buy. But the 1800's??? What sort of records & what sorts of measurements do we have from back then? Tree rings, polar ice samples, and the farmer's almanac?
