The News Journal

10/12/2004

In just four months, Southwest Airlines has taken over as the No. 2 airline at Philadelphia International Airport, using a low-cost formula to reshuffle the pecking order at the region's main airport.

According to airport figures, Southwest had 6 percent of all passenger traffic at the airport in August, the most recent month for which numbers are available. That puts the company behind US Airways, which had 62 percent of all traffic, but ahead of Delta Air Lines, which previously had been No. 2.

"They will continue to grow and eventually dominate that market," stock analyst Ray Neidl said of Southwest.

How long it takes the company to become the No. 1 carrier in Philadelphia depends on how US Airways fares in Bankruptcy Court. US Airways is struggling to reorganize and lower its costs in order to compete in an industry that has been hit hard by price wars and rising fuel costs, Neidl said.

The change in passenger volume is the latest sign that Southwest is putting pressure on its rivals. It was not clear from the numbers, whether the low-cost airline has taken passengers from other carriers or is attracting new passengers, said airport spokesman Mark Pesce.

But the figures show that Southwest is gaining passengers faster than US Airways, as both companies add flights at the airport.

Company spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said Southwest's growth was the result of its low fares and an expanding schedule.

Ticket prices at the Philadelphia airport had been among the most expensive in the country before Southwest began offering a smaller number of flights in May. Since then, US Airways has begun matching Southwest's fares and added a number of new flights as well.

US Airways will add flights next month at Philadelphia, which is the company's most important airport. Spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said the change does not mean US Airways is losing ground to Southwest.

"We are holding our own in Philadelphia," Kudwa said.

Between June and August, US Airways boosted the number of passengers at Philadelphia by almost 31,000, while Southwest added about 77,000. Southwest started service in Philadelphia in May with 14 daily flights. The company doubled that to 28 in July and will add 14 more flights at the end of October. US Airways, which filed for bankruptcy last month, has added flights even more aggressively than Southwest. It increased the number of offered 392 flights in May, and currently offers 426 flights out of Philadelphia. Next month, as the company cuts back service in Pittsburgh, it will add 35 more flights.

"If Allied planes ever bomb Berlin, you can call me Meyer."

I hear there's an opening as the Iraqi Information Minister.

"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"

It's BWI all over again. Only this time SWA will take over the airport much sooner...

When's the PHL crewbase opening up?

How many of you SWA guys are using the short runway?

Ya'll keep up the good work!

And what exactly is the business plan at your fantastic airline? Enlighten us aviators or shut up and go away. Don't just make a post without substance. Tell everyone why your airline is run better, and how we could all be better off working there. And BTW, which airline is that?

From what I hear we (ASA) are making money. But if you are a dinghy tied to the Titanic guess what?

Not too long ago I remember people leaving SWA for Continental, Delta, et cetera. Funny how things change.

If SWA is the future, God help us!

Cheers, Wil

Oh, the old "you guys once wanted to work here (back when other airlines were making money and the future looked stable) argument". Classic...

You can always coun't on SWA being successful, they are the "Greyhound" of the sky and are by far the cheapest. Those who have option available to them seem to avoid them, me being one of them. Many many more who "don't" have those options must go the SWA way. I flew on em once and that was enough to last a lifetime. Walk through the SWA terminal in HOU on any given Friday, you will swear that you are on the streets of Mexico City. It truly takes a "unique" person to think SWA is the "dream" carrier for pax comfort, God bless them.

This is almost as bad as some dipstick asking about a AA/SWA merger, which will never happen.

350, I have a few prejudices myself, but I don't dwell on them. Matter of fact, I actively try to put them behind me. I find that my life is better when I focus on the positive. I realize that you don't like SWA, but give it a break man. In your zeal to insult SWA, now you've shown your self to be a racist. I dang sure hope that you only got your ratings in Texas; if you're actually a Texan, you're doing a good job of making us look bad.

To everyone else, 350 is not representative of most Texans. We luv SWA, and don't look down upon our neighbor to the south.

The bitterness over SWA escapes me. I'm retiring from mil flying soon and would be elated to work for SWA. There are others in my unit (mostly legacy furloughs) that can barely conceal raw hatred for SWA when discussions of airlines drift that way. I can see the disappointment of seeing the dramatic paradigm shift that is still occurring in the airline industry in relation to pay and "the way it used to be". I can see envy. I can see the frustration with what many call the "Wal-Mart-ization" of the skies. What I can't see is how those same folks can't step back and logically look at reality. I'm definitely not pointing fingers, nor saying that there isn't a valid reason(s) for the way the feel. Maybe its because "I haven't been there". Whatever the reason, its hard to argue with success.
I'd count myself blessed to be a part of SWA.

walden, the bitterness is due to ignorance and lack of understanding. Instead of looking at the failures of the legacy carriers to service their own markets, they look at the success of SWA in servicing its market, and jealosy overcomes them. It's human nature I guess.

They don't realize that SWA management had the discipline to maintain a low cost structure during the time that legacy carrier management was going on a spending spree. The current debt load of the legacys is killing them. SWA found their niche and grew slowly. Now they get to reap the rewards afforded to managers who manage for the long term.

I'd count myself blessed to be a part of SWA.
Roger that,

Yeah and terminal "A" in PHX is so much better. Fact is, unless you're riding in first drinking free booze and eating steak, SWA is as good as as any other airline. Better in moset cases since we do not have (many) disgruntled employees.

That, and wil is a dipsh1t. His views show poor judgement. I fear he may be dangerous in the cockpit.

Who said SWA is the Greyhound of the skies...I like that one.

Just shows how far we have gone from real silverware and classy flightattendants to being compared to a......BUS company !

-- Blasted off, got inverted, the instructor said please I just had breakfast, went for the ILS, landed it CAT III, smiled to the cute young F/A, sleepless nights in Hong-Kong and Rio...and still trying to pay my bills --

Yeah, we will take their money. Or another way to put it: their money is green. It keeps my paycheck coming... I don't care who is in back.

I beg to differ ! I care who is in the back !

When I had 16 First Class happy paying customers flying to Hong-Kong behind me...I had a chance to not only eat some of their steaks and have a real espresso, but also a nice chunk of money called : Pension !

Well, we don't have first class so.. So I will repeat, I don't care who is sitting behind me, just as long as there are people. We don't have steaks at SWA either (I'm sure that is a shock to you) so I am unable to pimp my company for a free meal, unless it involves peanuts.

Hey 350, you fly for Mesa? Why would you bad mouth a major carrier like SWA when your not even in the game..?

3 5 -

You got one under-achieving Spirit captain who has yet to feel the luv, obvious he will suck until dry here with these guys. SWA is the greyhound of the sky whether one will want to admit it or not. Enigma was also the brilliant one who posted on the AA/SWA merger, u follow?.

Airways guys keep denying them the j/s to the SWA guys in PHL, that has to be the best email I have gotten in recent times, bravo.

What a brilliant post, I knew ya'll had some smart ones...
