Southwest CEO: Atlanta Market Ripe for Expansion
ATLANTA, GA (WABE) - Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly, talking to analysts Thursday about the upcoming merger with AirTran, said acquiring the discounter will bring in cash from day one.
"They have already established profitability in what will be new Southwest markets," he said.
But Kelly's comments indicate Southwest plans to fatten that cash cow a bit more.
AirTran brings to the merger new routes and passengers but more than that, it gives Southwest a rare growth opportunity.
"Most of those new markets are not fully developed and are in need of further expansion, and I would point to Atlanta in particular," Kelly said.
A Southwest spokesman tells WABE Atlanta's airport will provide more gates than the airline has at any other airport, which paves the way to expand service beyond what's already here.
Meanwhile, Southwest this week changed a standing order it had for 20 new planes. It's asked Boeing for bigger ones.
