Meanwhile, Terry Maxon of The Dallas Morning News says that if the airline rankings don't jive with what you may have seen previously, there may be a reason. He writes "Delta usually leads the list of airlines ranked by passenger traffic, but two factors skewed the [BTS] statistics in favor of Southwest for total passengers and American for international passengers."
He explains: "The industry most often uses 'revenue passenger miles' – passengers multiplied by the number of miles they traveled – to rank carriers by traffic. However, the [BTS] looks at the number of passengers who boarded airplanes without regard for whether they were traveling 240 miles from Dallas to Houston or 7,300 miles from New York to Delhi, India. And under that measure, Dallas-based Southwest, which has no international flights and has concentrated on shorter flights, led the nation by a wide gap."

Odd that they switched criteria.

Third year in a row with the most passengers. Good job now start charging more for ticket prices. One dollar more equals and extra 100 million.

SWA flies 101m of the domestic 618m passengers for 16% of the domestic market. Kelly was heard saying he wants 51%, he has a ways to go..

I hear Song is really chipping away at SWA's market. And that they've pretty much killed AirTran and JetBlue. It's only a matter of time before they control 51% of the market.

Delta is laughing all the way to the bank.

Very true, I guess Delta's billion dollar losses aren't either! Just having some fun at the General's expense.

Making fun of a guy who made a hedging mistake? That's right, one guy made that mistake. I bet he isn't around making those decisions now. Didn't you guys have a hedging problem last year too, stopping that constant quarter profit streak? Well, at least you get to go to ELP or LBB 5 times within 3 days! And, can't forget ISP and HRL. Enjoy all of that.

Bye Bye--General Lee
