I'm new to the boards so I apologize if this has been addressed before. How important is the 4 year degree for Southwest? I am a checkairman - sim instructor at a large regional airline - around 3000 pic jet. Do I have a chance at getting an interview/hired without a 4 year degree and without the type ?

Thx

SWA seems to care more about checkairman status than anything else. If you've got a checkairman letter and that much PIC, then you've probably got a very good chance at an interview. If you get your 737 type, then you'll probably get a call within a month of finishing the type ride.

It's definitely preferred that you have a 4 year degree. I would say somewhere around 95% or more of our pilots do. In my tenure here, I have only flown with two people who did not have it. The Check Airman thing is huge and with those quals, I am sure you will get the call to interview soon. Good Luck!

You have an excellent chance of getting an interview/hired without a 4 year degree if you have some experience and other credentials to sort of off-set it. I know of several.

You can get the interview without the degree, it just takes a little longer.

Good Luck!

I recency of experience a big one? I do not have a degree but have plenty of PIC and a check airman letter but I have been in the right seat now for 2.5 years (changed jobs).

Thanks.

College Degree

According to Air Inc's figures from last year 8% of the SWA pilots hired did not have a four year degree. At Jet Blue it was 15%. The reason most pilots hired have college degrees it is because most of the pilots applying have college degrees. If few pilots with college degrees applied (unlikely in SWA's case) then most pilots hired would not have college degrees.
