Yes, here is some information on Southern Air.

I was in the June 2004 class. All training is done in Miami at AeroService. Pay is $48.00 per day until completion of line IOE, which take appx. 45-50 days. Company paid hotel suite. F/O pay then goes to $53.90 ph with a 60 hour guarantee. Capt’s pay is appx. $79.00. $48.00 a day perdiem from your homebase to start the trip.

Everyone is home based. The company puts everyone in plush 4-5 star hotels and full catering on all trips. You will not go hungry and you will not loose weight !!!.

Currently interviewing for a mid-Sept 2004 class. Most of the crews in the last 2 class have been furloughed heavy jet guy’s from Atlas, Evergreen, Emery, Kittyhawk, Arrow Air, etc, with lots of heavy jet international experience.

The company currently has 4 a/c. and getting more. All are –200 high gross freighters with the superior GE engine. Very nice. Most a/c are coming from Atlas/Polar as they cancel leases and send them to the desert. The owner wants to have a total of 7 a/c by January 1, 2005. A little ambitious, but he has a record of getting things done.

2 a/c are on Korean Air out of Seoul/Inchon, Korea. Flights go to ANC, then the lower 48; ORD, DFW, LAX, SFO and return.

Beginning in late August, 1 aircraft on Cathay Pacific out of Hong Kong to ANC and JFK, LAX, ORD, and SFO and return. Out of Hong Kong, the aircraft also goes to Dubai and on to Munich and Frankfurt.

In September we start a flight for China Air (CAAC) out of Bejing/Shanghai to ANC and onward to LAX, SFO, ORD and JFK and return.

Not a bad company. It is not FedEx, but far better than the being the worst. There is no political intrigue/gun running as at Evergreen (I am from there), no play one group against another union battles as in Atlas/Polar (I am from there also, furloughed) and no junkyard jets as at Kalitta (I am furloughed KittyHawk).

Straight forward training, good maintenance and easy going management. On the negative side, there is no deadhead pay for the first year, and most of the trips are appx. 20 days long; with what I understand both of these items are soon to be addressed and possibly change.

Furloughed from Atlas, I presume? I know four people who just finished GS at Polar, so one would think that any furloughs would've been recalled.

I didn't know that Atlas was on furlough, though possibly you meant "furloughed and refused recall".

Haven't had any recalls at Polar cause there were no furloughs .... lol
And you're correct the ones who didn't come back at Atlas just refused the recall.
Atlas hiring 60-100 and Polar approx 30.
What position does Mike Hartley have at SAI?
One good thing though, Marc Ryan's at Kalitta now, so scheduling should have improved since my days there

Atlas/Polar has played them against each other in the past. When I was there Atlas gave 3 b747-300s to Polar and Atlas furloughed while Polar hired off the street. Atlas guys had a choice to go to Polar, but you would start as a new hire at the bottom of the pay scale and put on the bottom of their list. Just some of the abuse that is standard over there.

We were all wondering at CX where we were getting the extra lift from. We thought it was Air Atlanta. Are yo sure you guys at Southern will be doing North America as well? I've seen numerous posts referencing the long trips (3 weeks, etc) that are at Southern. Anybody in the know able to provide info in reguards to how much time off you would get? How does scheudling work? Any new info?

When I was there sched was 20 days on on a 30 day month & 21 days on on a 31 day month, so 10 days off a month. Has it changed since?

no, you have 10 days off in a 30 day month, 11 off in a 31 day month. This is what they told me. can't say from personal experience
