I was wondering if anyone could explain how simultaneous offset intimate approachs (SOIA) and precision runway monitoring (PRM) actually work??

SFO has been testing a new radar system to reduce delays during bad weather with United and American Airlines.

The offset intimate approach is another radio landing system that gives a beam about 3 degrees offset from the main runway in which the pilot tunes up in his aircraft and starts following that beam to the ground. Does this just work like a LOC/GS? and if so why build a new system for it?

The PRM, the precision runway monitor, is a high scan radar that gives air traffic control in the tower a very accurate read of where the aircraft is for separation. Isnt this just a precision approach radar?

If you have any links that explain these systems please let me know. thanks

Ryan

If the weather at SFO is less than 5000 and 5 miles they are going to have delays... Can you say," controller Change"?

lets see if I can remember a little from the last recurrent about SOIA.

One aircraft flies a normal ILS while another aircraft flies a laterally displaced LDA with a glideslope approach to a close parallel rumway.

So basically the the pilot flying the LDA/GS approach is flying towards the runway at an angle along the edge of the protected area of the ILS on the parallel runway.

At the MAP, the pilot on the LDA/GS must be able to see the aircraft on the ILS approach and then manuver to land while maintaining seperation.

I hope this is at least 50% correct. Try a google search for a diagram of the SOIA procedure.
