Plane lands safely at Shannon Airport

THE aircraft at the centre of an emergency over Irish airspace this (Sunday) morning has landed safely at Shannon Airport.

The US Airways Boeing 767, which was flying from Philadelphia to Dublin, landed at the airport around 11am.

Prior to landing the aircraft had contacted air traffic control at Shannon to report a small electrical fire in the front cargo hold of the plane.

The airport’s emergency plan was activated, and ambulances and fire engines from Shannon, Ennis and Limerick rushed to the airport to be on standby, while fishing vessels off the west coast were also informed of the situation in case the plane had to ditch in the water.

Just around 11am the plane, which had 190 passengers and 10 crew on board, landed on Shannon’s largest runways and came to an immediate halt in the middle of the runway.

Fire trucks rushed to the plane but it is understood the fire was already brought under control, either by airplane crew or by the plane’s built-in fire control mechanism.

Once given the all-clear the plane taxied to the terminal where passengers and crew disembarked in the normal fashion.

The passengers ands crew will now be transferred to Dublin by bus this afternoon.
