Just curious how things looked for Skywest in 2006. I'm not keenly familiar with them and their outlook. I have, however, heard glowing things about the airline in general.

Things are great where I'm presently working, and feel I'm in a good position here. That said, on a recent trip out to SAN, I could see myself moving out there at some point, and wanted to see what the concencus on Skywest is.

Questions:

1.) Hiring in 2006, and for which plane?
2.) How are bases/lines for both planes?
3.) Likes and Gripes about Skywest from pilots?
4.) Are bases commutable?
5.) Uprade time in both planes?
6.) Interview process?
7.) Much reserve to start?
8.) Training pay, per diem?

Thank you very much!

I'll put it this way - this site seems to attract a fair amount of disgruntled workers . How many of those are from Skywest?!

I'd say make the jump!

1) Yes. Both airplanes. I've heard a rumor of 500, but it's just a rumor, take it or leave it.

2) Brasilia is mostly CA. If you want good lines (in my opinion) you'll be in CA. There're a few domiciles in CA that only do locals. Fresno is the largest domicile with the largest variety of trips. Don't know much about the jet bases.

3) Likes, well, most people I've met are pretty good people. The trips pretty good, and we have PBS, which I like, others don't. Dislikes? SFO has a lot of swaps currently, but that's more due to United's schedule than the company. Don't really have any other dislikes, I'm pretty content. I would like to be paid more, but so would everyone else in every other occupation.

4) Depends on the base. If you plan to commute, don't go to one of the domiciles that only fly locals.

5) Brasilia seems to be around 1.5 years, haven't really paid attention to the jet.

7) Depends on the base, the airplane, and current hiring. You'll be on reserve longer in the jet because Brasilia FOs may transition and cut you off. If you get hired in the beginning or middle of a hiring wave, you probably won't be on reserve long, unless you get a senior base.

8) Training pay: yes, 60-65 hours/month I think? Per diem is $1.6/hr, don't know if you get it in training or not.

Ralgha-

Thanks for nice reply! I'm going to check out aviationinterviews.com. I'm in the beginning of exploring a possible move. I appreciate the info, thanks again. Fly safe.

Dont forget the ATL base, when SKYW starts to take over all of ASA 700's, and any new 900/705 flying due to their one - low, 50 seat rate for all aircraft. The ASA pilots won't stand for it, so JA will just take 'em all away. Look for SKYW upgrade time to drop to a year or two, while ASA's will rise to the 7-10 year range.

Funny about the low 50 seat rate you mentioned. I've been at Skywest 12 years and my first two months this year so far I made 21000. That of course includes per diem, bonuses, vacation and sick time used etc. So that's 10500 per month. It's realy hard to get caught up in the pay argument. Work rules also have alot to do with how well one does. I work three locals a week, my wife stays home with the kids. I have a real hard time balling about my situation. Had a United captain in my jump the other day. He's been there 16 years and flys the 320. He said he made about 11500 per month give or take.
Would it be nice to make more? Sure.

A lot of guys don't realize that what matters is the bottom line. The 423 plan, stock options, bonuses, and profit sharing add up after a while. Yeah it would be better to have all rolled into an hourly rate but the money still spends. How many captains at UAL would trade for your lifestyle? Home most nights. Work 3 or 4 days a week. Better work rules than UAL narrowbody. I can think of worse things to endure.
