Horizon currently has one class later this month, and another in February. I'm not sure if they've filled them yet, but it sounds lke there has been a lot of interviewing going on. Also, the latest rumor is for at least one class per month continuing at least through June, so expect interviews to continue.

I agree with P-dawg. Get your stuff in soon. I have heard that they will have classes all year. Talked to an ACP the other day and he predicts upgrade time will drop by half the time by mid 2007. Who really knows if that is all true, and it depends on if the company keeps more 200's than they said they would get rid of. If it is true great, if not then upgrade time will probably be half a decade or more, but QX is a stable company and quality of life is pretty good. Skywest is a great company that seems to have it together from what I hear, but I think the 2 year upgrade there might be over for a while, but what do I know.

With all due respect to the QX people...

QX is a great company but I'd be very leery about them right now. Their parent company, Alaska, recently won arbitration against the Alaska pilots to the tune of a rather large paycut and given CMR's recent concession woes, QX will be up next for concessions.

To think otherwise...

Just be prepared is all I'm saying.

while what you say is mostly true ............we haven't even started negotiations yet, and it is going to be a very long process so who knows what will happen by the time we need to actually vote on something. BTW the Alaska deal was a raw one, it has nothing to do with QX.

RedPrarie,
I can think of several reasons to advise a young pilot NOT to apply to Horizon, however your reasoning is uninformed and would not be one of them.

You obviously don't work here....

We've been making money for the past three years now. We have aircraft on order. And most of all, we are not Comair. Horizon and Comair are two completly different animals. In case you havent noticed, we are not owned by a bankrupt major. You can even debate the issue of wheter Comair is really an airline to begin with being owned by Delta and all. We also are not going into concessionary negoiations.

Of course, this won't stop management from posting every piece of bad news they can find on onyourhorizon.com to scare us into concessions. I hope this pilot group is a he!! of a lot smarter than that.

And the only reason that AS got that 30% cut is becasue of that bull$hit arbritrator (who was on his way to retirement so he took every dime he could get his hands on becasue he knew damm well that he would never work again once he handed down this decision) who sided with billy boy. I don't work at AS but I hear they're ready to fight tooth and nail to get that cash back.

Except for the upgrade times, I like it here. And if you really want to be in the NW (which seems to be the only peope coming through right now) and you can stand the upgrade times, (which should come down depending how many airframes we end up getting) then apply.

Southbound is right however, I can think of several reasons why not to apply here either. I'd be a jet Capt alywhere else right now If I went there instead of messing with QX. But, think about this, we are stable. And you can't say that about a lot of regionals (feeding bankrupt majors) right now.

Horizon does seem to be a decent regional, and one of the few I'd ever have anything to do with if I were desperate enough for a job, but what is to prevent Alaska from putting up for bid any or all of the regional feed they need like Continental did? There seems to be no nothing to prevent this from continuing to happen. Or at the very least, Alaska could give any future regional feed to another airline while causing Horizon to stagnate. The whole regional picture is a sorry state of affairs if you ask me.

Probably because Horizon is not regional feed for Alaska...We only have couple of routes where we even pay a fee for departure and believe it or not we have a couple of routes where we are paid by them.....Unlike every other regional in the country, Horizon has there own reservations center and they sell there own tickets that code share on Alaska....That is is one of the reasons that they are trying to dump those crj-700 and get more dash 8 400...They found out immediately that you cant stand alone with a crj and make a profit if you are a traditional airline rather than a lift provider....When you figure that regardless of upgrade you will probably sit at least 5 to 7 years at any regional it might be good to be at a decent one.

And as far as the arbitration award for us...We brought it on ourselves...That side letter could have been flushed many years ago but no one wanted to take it on and it came due during a long down turn in the airline business and we lost.....Keeping it in our contract was like playing poker..Eventually everyone loses big time.....And no we are not ready to fight tooth and nail to get the cash back....We have the same syndrome that every decent airline has...You convince yourself that this is the best job at the best airline and cant imagine life with out it. No one here is prepared to hand back their books and walk away and that is the attitude that you need to have to flush a management group like ours.....We may someday see the dollar figure back but the dollars will buy 30 % less than when we took the cut plain and simple...We are from here on always going to have 30% less buying power and that is what really counts.......good luck with you career choice
