For those of you who have recently been hired by SkyWest or are in the pool (last couple of months until now), I am curious as to when your class date was/will be, and what equipment you got assigned to. Thanks!
 
I know personally most at the bottom 150 of the list went into the Brasilia, though we are thick with Bro F.O.s and just heard today newhires into that airplane are on hold for the rest of the year. Newhires are still being put into the RJ for spots not wanted by current employees wanting a transition, or unable due to seat-lock (many were hired within the past 12 months).

With so many jets coming, I have heard most newhires will be put into the jet, though the classes will be smaller. When the deliveries really hit full stride (in the next 6 months) will be the same time most seat-locks will expire and I would expect large classes of newhires going into the Brasilia to replace those who transition/upgrade.

So what does that mean for someone who's been in the pool for a couple of months now? Also, if I was originally assigned to the Bro, would they change that to the Jet? How big is the pool? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just curious as to what is going on. Thanks for your help.

I've been in the pool for a couple of months. No class dates yet. Hopefully soon. How about you?

I interviewed on May 27th, and was placed in the RJ pool. Still no word yet. Also, a friend of mine interviewed May 4th and was placed in the RJ pool. Still no word for him either. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. Would appreciate any info.
 
Disclaimer: Don't take what I post here as company policy or as me having access to inside info. I am just a lowly line-pilot (not in any way involved in the training dept.), but I do keep my ears open as I spend time in SLC and always stay in touch with friends as they transition, go to recurrent, or otherwise speak with those back in the mothership who occasionally share info regarding where we are at, and where we are going.



Regarding those hired into the Bro and now swimming, I have no idea what will happen. I think when they hire people they hire them specifically for an A/C (those with higher time, previous 121 or jet experience into the RJ), but those general req's probably change with the need, or lack therof, of a large number of newhires. Best advice I can give is to call back to SLC and tell them you'll be available for either aircraft, whichever comes first.

Word is that the Bro classes are done for the rest of the year. Anyone in the pool will be in it for a while. However, I wouldn't be surprised if things change at the flip of a switch. I was hired first week of March and am waiting too.

I'm paddling in the pool also for the EMB-120. Interviewed May 18th. I guess we'll just have to wait and see............
 
for those in the rj pool, i just saw a posting for 15 newhires to start class on the 21st of july going to ORD. congrats to those guys. also looked at the standing bid for the rj fo's and almost all on the list to transition are seat locked until the begining of 2005. translation: emb fo's won't be needed for a while, and newhires will be going to the rj until the end of the year. good luck.

Mookie,

Would you happen to know if they'll send those in the EMB pool into the RJ classes, or do we have to wait until they start up the EMB classes again? (When might that be?) Basically, I think I'm asking if there are 2 pools; 1 RJ pool and 1 EMB pool? And do they mix and match for need or are you in one only? I haven't been able to figure that out yet. Thanks for you help.

Dont' know whether or not there are two pools. I know of a few guys who were waiting for emb classes and two days before were sent to the jet. you will spend alot less time on reserver in the emb, and make more $$$ your first year, and then be able to transition after a year to make 2nd year rj pay. we've also been told that there won't be any more emb upgrades the rest of the year...

Thanks for the info, Mookie. I've been sitting in the EMB pool since March. Actually I was originally told to expect the May 3 class, but they downsized it from 30 to 20 (I think?) and I guess I was one of the 10. So now with the rumor of EMB stuff put off for awhile I was just hoping to get a class date sometime soon. It doesn't really matter which equipment (although I like the idea of the EMB first year and the jet the second), I'm just ready to start working.

I asked about a switch ot the RJ as well since I was assigned the Bro and it was a no go. I guess they assign you an aircraft during your interivew and your sticking to it.

I was just curious if you emailed someone at the HR/training department to see if you could switch from the Bro to the CRJ, and if so, how long did it take you to get a reply? I am just curious if email is the most effective way to communicate with them. Thanks!
 
I ramp for SKYW so I can communicate with them thru company email. Makes things a lot easier. If you are in the pool you should have received a packet aand camielle's email address along with it for any questions you may have. I personally asked one of my interview captains in SLC about switching a/c.
He's probably reading this board, they quite frequently visit this site often.

I've also been in the EMB-120 pool since March. I've postponed and turned down other regional airline job offers since SkyWest is my number one choice. Known for great employee satisfaction among other things, I am convinced that I've made a good choice.

However, sitting in the pool while watching others get hired into the jet and starting their classes doesn't make me feel good one bit. Although prior 121/Jet experience seem to be factors determining aircraft assignment, I know of instances where someone with half my flight time who interviewed after me got the jet class (and has completed training already!).

So it seems that timing may have been the culprit here, at least that's all I can think of. It would seem that one's date of hire (date of job offer) should play some role in their class date, thus seniority within the company. Should I have applied later/requested a later interview date/or re-apply so as to get the jet class? It just doesn't make sense. Our interview group was told during the interview that "we are very lucky to be among the first of the hiring wave of 200-300 pilots". So much for that.

If after hiring so many poolies, circumstances have changed regarding the EMB-120 program, shouldn't there be adjustments made to accomodate the EMB-120 poolies into jet classes PRIOR to hiring newhires direct?

I am disappointed at the misleading information given by SkyWest regarding class dates to expect, but really disappointed with the complete lack of communication thereafter.

I can only be patient and trust that my decision to stay will allow me to reap the benefits of "employee satisfaction" that SkyWest employees rave about.

i was originaly given an interview date in the end of march. I decided to push my date back to the end of april becasue it would have been easier to get off work etc. I was also asigned to wait for the emb. there was a guy in my interview group who got the jet and the last time i talked to him he was going to the sim so im sure by now he is on line.
so if i was to guess, and talk about an ego killer, i would have to say that the placement has more to do with performance during the interview than it does total time, or timing of interview.
however it would seem that even though we are waiting for a class date I think the 120 might be the better choice, with less reserve time translating to more flying, translating to more money. at the sacrafice of losing senority though.
we are all frustrated with not knowing whats going on, but then i dont think they(skywest) know either. otherwise they would have told us by now. they certainly cant go around making conjectures as to when we will start... have people quit there jobs because of it and then what?
yes i thnk its the best choice to wait it out, fly skywest!

Just to give you guy's/gals some perspective, there have been times where people, including myself, had to wait upwards of a year to start. If you passed on other classes with other airlines, I wouldn't dwell on that issue, b/c second guessing will drive you insane. This place is a very good place to work, with great equipment, lots of growth, etc. Look at SkyWest.com to see the delivery schedule. We have 39 RJ's coming between now and next May. YOU WILL GET A CLASS!!! Another issue with class placement, and I'm not condoning this at all, but there is a quota of jet for job guys from United that we have to fill in order to take delivery of the 70 seat rj's. More than likely that quota has not been filled, so that is probably why you guys were passed up or placed in the emb. To look on the bright side, during certain hiring cycles, including the one coming up, EMB upgrade has been very fast for those whoa re willing to relocate anywhere, and having flown the airplane is a huge benefit.

Rumor is there might be one last class before years end in August with about 10-15 people in it. Thats only rumor though. The other rumor I heard was that we are done with EMB classes for the rest of the year. Yikes! I too am anxious seeing all my collegues getting hired, going thru training and flying the line. But I firmly beleive that waiting for SKYW is the best thing to do. It truly is a great company to work for.
 
The wise thing to do is to go to the first airline that hires you. You can always leave for Skywest.
