Hi everyone,
I am about to obtain the minimum 1000 total hours and the 100 hundredth multi-Engine time. Just as you might be assuming, I am already thinking to apply to a regional airline, mainly SkyWest because I live in San Francisco. I would like to know what really determines what airplane they might give me the CRJ or the Brasilia. I am also thinking to attend the ATP Regional Certification Course where they teach you all of what you need to know about the CRJ-200 and you log 20 hours of CRJ simulator. at the end of the course you are expected to fly the CRJ-200 at ATP standarts. Would that really help me be placed on the CRJ? What would I be expected to know for a skywest interview?

Thank you

Getting an interview without knowing someone right at the min. times will be tough. And I'd scratch the CRJ course, instead take that money and get more twin time. Aircraft assignments are done depending on their needs and your experience.

For interview gouge look at www.aviationinterviews.com

Best wishes,

TA

Are you willing to fly 70 seat airplanes for 50 seat money?

YOU'RE HIRED!!!

You know, I'm really trying not to respond to statments like the above...

Try not to worry about whether you get one aircraft or the other. You might find that you could still learn a thing or two from flying the Brasilia.

Who would give up better schedules, more seniority, and better QOL and go to the jet? I'm staying in the bro and enjoying 16 days off per month with weekends off too. If I was on the jet, I'd probably be getting 12 days off per month, have to commute to SLC or DEN, and be away from home another 3-4 days per month commuting. I'd say take the bro and you'll have a better QOL. BTW- don't buy that CRJ crap-your better off without it. They could care less if you have 20 hours of RJ sim time.

Rouge, I agree..........but an ASA captain? Hes just pissed that Delta's gonna dump his and Comairs a$$ so they don't go bankrupt.

Not sure if you've followed the company but all of the growth is in places like DEN and ORD. You might be able to hold a CA base as an FO but you'll probably be waiting a long time to upgrade if you don't want to commute.

I agree with the other responses about that RJ course. It's a waste of money and is not likely to have any impact on getting hired.

Hey CRJ2008,

SkyWest is a great place to apply to and I encourage you to keep updating your application until you get a call for an interview. Right now, there are no group interviews scheduled, but once they become available, make sure you goto one of those. In the mean time, if you don't get a call from SkyWest, start applying for a 135 job, that experience is very valuable.

Don't worry about which airplane they put you into, worry about getting the job. After a year, you can bid for the CRJ if you'd like. And don't spend your money on the CRJ certification course, you'd be better off buying a CRJ study guide(I know they sell them, I just forgot where...) and saving your money for training because there is no pay during that time. Hope this helps man. Good luck!

Royal, you are so right. I wonder how long that's going to last though. Those bro's aren't getting any younger. Being stuck on a dying airplane can do bad things to one's QOL. I don't know, does anyone think SkyWest is going to go all-jet? I'd love to see those Q400s they're talking about, but who knows? 2008 is a long time away.

hahahaha, thats funny! We all know the EMB guys have way more fun then the jet jocks! I swear, you walk into the crew lounge at the remote terminal and its like, "aaaaaayyy, yoooooo, hows it going, pull up a chair, this rounds on me". You go to the crew lounge on the jet side and its like," Show me your badge, how many years with the copmany do you have? whats your seniority? where are you based? Crew scheduling has been sending us all over the place. They're screwing us!" Its kinda like that mentality of you wish I never won the lotto because life was easier without it. Besides, I'd rather ride up and down the west coast all day long listening to my IPOD in 72 degree weather, than going to ORD and be yelled at by the ground controllers for breathing the wrong way!

I might go to the jet one day, if either
#1 we jet something bigger and the jet goes jr
#2 I can hold the top 30% of lines at a base.
#3 the bro is gone!

Other than that, life is good!

Uh, guess you didn't get the memo...:)

Sorry to be off topic, maybe it's not.

Read alot and cannot find if Regionals hire qualified pilots who are 40-43 years old? Without an aviation backround prior to when they were 37.

Thanks so much, thinking of speading alot on training, but at 37 not sure if it will pay off.

Thank you All !!

Hi everyone,

I just want to thank all of you for giving me your honest oppinions and personal experiences. I definately think this is the best website to help low time pilots like me get somewhere. I just want to say that I thank you all very much your time and interest in my topic. :D :D

Knock yourself out. Eleven plus years in paddle jets was enough for me. BTW, LAX controllers are good at yelling too. Just not quite as good since Rod left. Don't know why you're intimidated by ORD. It's a piece of cake, sissy :D

AF

Rodzilla

Guess where Rod is now?

Working ORD tower/ground...

I know. I've heard him. But you know what? He's not nearly as caustic as he used to be in LAX.

He was their union safety rep, and one of the more unorthodox controllers in LAX. Loved to argue with pilots, especially SKYW pilots.

Of course they hire pilots that age! In my new hire class we had 2 guys 55 and 56 years old. If you get hired at 43 you'd still have 17 years of fun and interesting career. You really could retire as a junior but Captain at a major.

I personaly didn't start flying untill I was 27 and now at 31 I am a Brasilia Captain and I think, IMHO, with the pilot shortage coming up you will move even faster to making better money and to the majors if you wish.

Chase the dream!

Appreciate that encouragement. Just wanting assurance at this aspect of life. I'm happy for you, Captain, what is that like?
