Just curious when in ground school you get your employee badge. I'd like to be able to JS home on weekends and was wondering how long it might be. Thanks.

Its been awhile, but when I was in class we didn't get badges for several weeks. I do believe, however, that they are pretty good at getting you space available passes home on at least SkyWest flights. Hopefully that will work for you.

As far as jumpseating, you'll have to be put in the CASS system, and I'm not sure how long that takes. I imagine it isn't that quick.

Be careful with the actual, until you pass your checkride you are not a current qualified crewmember.

During training you have to do observation flights. If you did an observation flight going home and got stuck, it's not your fault is it? Don't rely on that, but they're understanding if you're honest.
It takes a few weeks to get the ID cards.

Some anecdotes on newhires, jumpseats, and observation flights. Years ago, there was a newhire who had jumped on a Brasilia out of SLC. The aircraft went down for maintenance. He arranged to get the next jumpseat out (or thought he did) and passed the word that they should not put a round-tripper in the jumpseat. As it turn out, the next (and last) flight of the day came out with the non-airline pilot, non company employee little brother of the captain (who was later hired as a pilot by the company) in the jumpseat. The newhire was stranded. To his credit, he rented a car and drove back to SLC to be in class on time Monday morning.

You cannot Jumpseat unless you are a qualified crewmember. The observation flights that you do in the jumpseat happen just after your checkride and before your IOE. FWIW

Start monday. Get badge the next wed. You are in c.a.s.s. as soon as you get your badge.

Cool, thanks for all your inputs. I start moday and was just trying to get an idea about being able to go home on the weekends since its a short hop to BOI from SLC. If I needed to use the space A stuff to ride Skywest, who would I talk to? Thanks guys.

You can jump seat as soon as your employment can be verified by electronic means. When you start training you can find this in the FOM Chapter 3. It says nothing about being a qualified crew member, and the regs don't state that you have to be a qualified crew member either. But this is a privillege and must be requested. Always dress professionally, be courteous, and always respect the Captain's decision.

Negative. You may do the required observation flights while in FTD - possibly during groundschool.

this is what i love about flight info.... aguing over nothing really... you can observe once you get your company id- (during ground school)

They have to be done before sim training. They recommend half be done before you start FTD.

You can jumpseat as soon as you get your ID badge, as others have stated on here.

The company will no longer issue space positive passes to get home except during ground school and sim if you have a break.

Both airlines I worked at (including SKW) required pre-SIM observation flights, which can be to/from your home town. You do not legally need to have completed training, although there may be an airline out there somewhere which requires this.

They will say you have to do your observations but in the last 8 years no one has ever asked for proof! FYI

And PS you can do them during training

This is not true. They asked to see my sign off sheet when I went to the sim. I had only done two but I flew the airplane prior to going to skywest so the guy didn't care. Another guy in my class was struggling and they asked to see his sign off sheet for the 6 observation flights and he hadn't done any. They said this was the deciding factor in choosing to not give him any extra training time. In other words, if he had of done them they would have been more understanding.

When I was there, Pat Ava would arrange positive space travel to and from home on the weekends for you if you asked. Very nice lady. Give her a try.

Pat is fantastic, however, apparently, she has been told not to allow PS travel for people in training anymore. There's a post detailing this on the sapa forums.

In 4 years and 4 groundschools I've never been asked to see them, but if things started going rough in training, I would have felt pretty stupid if I didn't have them. Probably I never got asked for proof because I am so awesome. Just a theory.
