For those who are on the fence about the union drive, I would humbly submit this:

ALPA will be whatever you guys make of it. It is much more a "local politics" organization than you have been told. Just look at the disparity of the different ALPA pilot groups out there. ie. Mesa and Comair. (lowest paid to previously highest paid)

They bring a huge arsenal of national assets, but the success or failure of the union falls almost completely at the local level. You won't find yourselves a pawn of some big ogre, nor will you find yourselves rescued.

What you will get out of the union is completely up to you. The difference is that you will be able to negotiate within a legal framework and the results of your efforts will be legally binding.

The company will still have the operational flexibility needed to remain competitive, as long as they work through the process and treat the pilot group fairly.

So pick up the phone.

That's my take.

At XJ National ALPA was very supportive during the bankruptcy and brought forth assets that would not have been available had we been without a union. Our local MECs do a great job and it is good to know that the protection is there if you need it. Get involved its your carreer.

I trust our "management lackeys" more than alpa lackeys. I'm not saying sapa is the solution. I am just fully aware of how inept alpa is. I also enjoy being able to walk into anyone in managements office and vent. I have done this a few times. They really arent as bad as some people say. I think alpa is absolutely the mafia legalized. You cannot trust them with anything! Yes we should be paid a bit more I have mentioned that many times- however compare everything we bring home to what others bring home... we have it good. I dont like that some policys change with just a pen stroke- it actually pisses me off. I dont think that having alpas legally binding contract is worth the trade.
Notice I didnt say I have the solutions? alpa isnt, sapa is just as bad in the other direction.
Not that my opinion matters but I think that alpa will pass. We will have our "legally binding contract" after our awesome reps with alpas help negotiate away many benefits we have. Not worth it to me.
The dues dont matter a bit I can budget and make do. I planned my employment at the regional level so I prepared for it financially- I gave up 6 years or so of seniority but its been worth it.

Honestly, I think SkyWest ALPA can do without volunteers with your mentality. We have enough pro-pilot pilots here that we'd probably do better without your "contribution".

See here is where I get confused. You say you don't trust the ALPA lackeys, well you are the ALPA lackey. You make or break your own destiny, well you and the rest of your group. Solidarity wins. As far as losing goodies, well that depends, at first you will maintain everything you have right now, mgmt. can't change it just because your now represented, thats the whole status quo thing, your current rules are frozen until you negotiate your first contract. Then when you start negotiating, you will have to horse trade to get some gains in some areas, but Skywest is extremely profitable, so this will not be anywhere near consessions. From my point of view, you all should atleast score ASA's latest TA, plus some of the goodies you are afraid you will lose, not to mention a split rate for the 200/700. Also, you will still be able to go and vent to the chief pilots etc. except now if you happen to piss one off they can't just fire you for the heck of it. A union is just a way to help level the playing field between mgmt. and labor, no it is not anywhere close to level, but atleast you are no longer at will employees subject to mgmts. whims. As many have stated before on here, a union is what YOU make it.

BTW, if it's voted in, I can guarantee I'll hold a position. There's no way I'll let the anti-company crowd infect our workplace with their entitlement attitudes.
