Skyway / Midwest Connect

Has anyone heard any news on Skyway lately? I havent seen any information on them in a while.

My friend just got hired with 515tt and 50multi. They gave him a class date a week later, but got bumped another week because their was only 3 in his class. Haven't heard anymore with the AirTran deal. I heard they were suppose to lose the 1900 routes to great lakes, but great lakes just doesn't have the man power to fly the routes so the 1900's will be around for another year or so. I also heard if Airtran picks up Midwest they will keep skyway around as their regional and move them out of MDW. Like I said tho,,,all RUMORS.

Since I left Skyway I've heard that everyone is flying a lot and that there isn't much new going on there. I hope everyone is well and that things get better.

I quit in April. They can't hire enough to RETIRE the 1900. Schedules are atrocious. Management is unwilling to even TRY to stop the attrition. MEH was fully successful in destroying a great small regional. I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

As Propsync said, I'd look elsewhere, unless you really just want to fly out of MKE for a while and move on ASAP.
With an AirTran takeover, it's anybody's guess what happens. Maybe Skyway gets bigger jets, maybe Skyway's Operating Certificate gets sold off and Skywest does all the flying, maybe AirTran drops the RJ thing entirely, your guess is as good as mine. Even if Midwest stays on its' own, most of us had very serious doubts about Skyway's future, courtesy of Midwest's use of Skywest on Skyway and Midwest routes. There's no way to convince a pilot group that everything is going to be ok when your airline is shrinking and dying while at the same time your holding company has contracted out for another airline to start flying in your colors on your old routes. But really, I'd apply to an airline that has a brighter future (hell, try Skywest and you too can fly out of MKE!).
I also quit working for Skyway (in June) after working there for 7 years. Your career opportunities are extremely limited there, and the only reason for working there is some quick 121 time and probably a Beech 1900 type. But things are so bad morale and quality-of-life-wise, that I'd really lean towards another regional, one that at least had an academic chance of providing you with a job long term if need be.
In the airline industry, you must go off of what you see and know, not rumors and what-ifs. You need to take a snapshot of any airline you want to work for and consider that, not get all wrapped up in planes they MIGHT buy or plans they MAY follow up on. So take a look at what's happening at Skyway, how many planes they have, staffing, schedules, etc, and how they're treated by their owners, Midwest Airlines.
The problem is, the people you would work with are really great there, and I even got along well with management. The training guys were top notch, and maintenance was awesome. Even flying the Dorkjet was a blast. Just career-wise, it was a dead end, at least for me.

With the AirTran deal out of the picture, how does their future look? Is it still uncertain?

If you live in MKE--works out great!!!!
If you treat it as a stepping stone, instead of a place to retire, it's great.

Could I have a decent QOL living that far from MKE? I'm guessing it's going to come down to what they require while on reserve.... Do they have a 2 hour call-out?

Reserve callout is 90min. I'm 30min door to door, so it works out well.

QOL has many variables, so I can't answer that.

Always thought it was funny how everybody bitches and moans at Skyway how bad things are and how you shouldnt come here yet we have probably the fastest upgrade times in the industry and the best pilot work group out there. Should you commute (fly) to work for Skyway?...No, but then again you shouldn't commute for any regional because your QOL will suck. If you live within a 2-3 hour drive of MKE it is your best option.

Beech's will be around at least another 6 months as Great Lake's is short staffed and short equipment to fulfill the EAS routes they were supposed to take over. Great Lakes will never fly those routes...I guarantee it. Only a matter of time before the DOT puts them back up for bidding. Any more questions, feel free to contact me.
