If they seem disfunctional or objectionable, that would be intoxicated.

Smelling like booze isn't enough.

No, but with reasonable cause then he has to be tested.

That depends on which side of the cockpit door the person is sitting. If someone shows up at work in the morning smelling like booze, they are still intoxicated from the night before. If a pax shows up smelling like booze, they are still intoxicated from the night before.

Furthermore, who is to say the pilot in question doesn't have a bona fide problem and had a couple jiggers for breakfast before he went to the lobby to catch the van?

I get sniffed at security all the time. For the record, I agree: it is a chicken crap tactic and/or policy. but all they ever smell is toothpaste. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy my beer the night before, it just means I have sufficient judgement to not destroy my career over a party and am sufficiently professional to not show up at an airplane drunk or hung over. 12 hour rule for 4 drinks or less, three hours per drink for more than 4

It is hard to believe there are guys who are actually defending the practice of pilots showing up for work smelling of alcohol. It is never OK, and if the minimum wage security guard catches you at it you get everything you deserve. I volunteer for a slot on the firing squad. A little chlorine for the gene pool.

I was talking about PASSENGERS, not pilots. I don't support pilots showing up for work drunk.

I tell my students to set the 6-pack between the fuel selector and the back seat. That way it's easily accessible in flight, and won't get tossed around by the bumps.
