Okay, this may sound real stupid, but I really am curious. Is it possible for single and multi time to be added together not to equal total time?

Well, as you said, it did sound stupid at first, until I saw your avitar. If you are in the Florida Panhandle (Redneck Riviera) then it isn't stupid at all. (hehehe);)

But, yeah, single+multi should = total, unless you got some helicopter or sumpthin' in there.

on sorta the same lines. Did you guys log PIC when doing inst ratings? It's probably my OCD kicking in, but not having my PIC=SOLO doesn't seem right.

if you are in simulated instrument conditions it can be logged as PIC, but if you are in IMC you can not be PIC unless you have an instrument rating, so then you would log everything else it is, but not PIC.

I don't think that's true. In either case, whether under simulated instrument or actual, the instructor is acting PIC. A pre-instrument student can't act as PIC while in actual, but can certainly log PIC is he/she is the sole manipulator in a plane for which they hold an appropriate certificate for that category and class.

Logging IMC time

Or, once more, the difference between logging time as PIC and acting as PIC.

As long as you are rated in the aircraft, i.e. single engine, multiengine, rotorcraft helicopter, etc., you can log the time as PIC for as long as you are the sole manipulator of the controls, with all time spent in IMC as actual instrument. Your CFI-I would also log it as PIC, along with actual instrument and dual given.
