Franks Arrives at Gulf HQ for Possible Iraq War
| 2/25/03

DOHA, Qatar (Reuters) - United States Army General Tommy Franks arrived in the Gulf state of Qatar Tuesday to take charge of the Central Command forward headquarters from which he would direct an invasion of Iraq, if so ordered by Washington.
Franks was greeted by senior officers at Camp As Sayliyah, outside the capital city of Doha, where his computerized mobile headquarters was set up six months ago and tested in a still-classified war exercise last December.
At Central Command's permanent headquarters in Florida, officers indicated Franks would be staying on in Qatar from now until the Iraq crisis was over.
The general is expected Wednesday to meet visiting British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon. Britain has pledged to put more than 30,000 British troops under U.S. command if an invasion of Iraq is launched.
