Having read the FARs about getting a SIC type, I've got a question about the process for those that have actually done it.

So I do some training, take those records and an 8710 to the FSDO. Do I leave there with a new temparary certificate?

Is there anything else to the process? It sounds almost too simple considering the FAA is involved...

Thanks for any insight...

A buddy of mine did it and didn't leave with a new temporary but instead received a new permanent in the mail sometime later.

121/135 PC training records within the last 24 months (i believe) and a 8710 gets you a new temporary. It is that simple. Your new certificate will have a type rating and the limitation "SIC PRIVILEGES ONLY."

We sent our copilot to initial SIC at Simuflite, he then walked his training records into the FSDO, and the fed signed him a new temp ticket with a CE-500 SIC type on it. Simple as that.

gotta have the 61.55 endorsement in the logbook as well. Don't shoot the messenger but the FSDO and flight safety both told me this in the opposite order.

Don't know if 91/135 is any different with respect to 121 in the SIC type world, but I sure as hell didn't have an endorsement in my logbook to get mine... My situation was exactly what Kevdog said but that we had APD's coming to the bases and handing out 8710's like candy...

It depends on how the inspector reads and understands the reg. Our POI's understanding is that if you are not a 135 operator, you have to have the endorsement. If you have training records and/or an 8410 you have meet the requirements and do not need the endorsement. His understanding is that 61.55 is meet by the required 135 training.

gotta question for you guys. I asked the FSDO and they told me their answer but wondering how you all think.

You are a type rated PIC of the aircraft and hold a current commercical multi-engine instrument instructor rating. Your F/O is SIC type rated in the aircraft. It is an empty leg and the F/O is going to have full control of the controls, can he log PIC in his log book along with Dual given to help add time to the PIC section of flight time. I know that the "captain" can take the controls anytime he feels necessary but is this a possible situation.

Hey man, you can do whatever you'd like with your logbook. If it's 121/135 I'd say no, and if you need a type-rating without limitations to fly the airplane PIC 91 I'd also say no.

i just got back from simuflite a week ago for a sic type. It was a pretty easy process go through the training, did a checkride didnt need a logbook endorsement and got the temporary.

sounds good to me. that is what i was told by the local fsdo. but ya know it seems like the answers are different depending on the person.

He cant log PIC if the guy in the left seat has an ATP or CFI? If it is training towards a type and a 91 leg, I dont see why the FO could not log PIC?

Because he is not appropriated rated in the aircraft. It is nothing more than logging dual. He would be appropriatly rated in the aircraft AFTER he completes his type ride.

Just curious, please do not take offence, but why not send him though the entire intial with a PIC type? Class is the same length with one more sim session.

Maybe because there is no checkride to fail for the SIC type for a part 91 operation (91K doesn't count) I have found a number of places just don't want to give you a type the first year to make sure you stick around a year. Also could be a cost thing. They charge more for the PIC initial than SIC initial even though it's basically all the same thing.
