Not getting bites on many many applications, I just took a job at a flight school telling them that I would stay at least six months. In the last week since taking the job I have gotten a few interview calls the most recent from Expressjet. I have declined up to this point but am considering going for an interview with Expressjet if I am so lucky.

Stick with the school for six months, or take a better job? Could this come back to burn me later?

And was there reciprocity on their part? I mean, what are they doing for you in return for bypassing obviously superior jobs? Six-figure salary? Free airplane rentals? Or do they just want you to "feel good" about fulfilling your rather one-sided "contract"? If you haven't figured out the answer by the end of this paragraph, you might not have what it takes to succeed in this industry.

One way to get around these types of so-called contracts is to state that you will not leave for an "equivalent" job (ie a competitor); only for a career advancement. I mean, if FDX or UPS called, you wouldn't hang up to go fly a 172, would you? Same difference, from your standpoint. Go to XJT.

Was this post a joke? Flight school owners are all scumbags they bad mouth people all the time but the airlines know they are scumbags. I believe the original message was ficticious. It really is a no brainer. Nobody sign contracts to flight instruct and if someone did it is probably crap anyway.

Generally, I'd say take the job. I've been furloughed, too. I don't believe in corporate loyalty. I do however, believe in personal honesty. I would advise you not to make commitments you don't plan to keep. No one forced you to commit to 6 months with your new company. If that was a condition of the job and you agreed to it, you should live up to your end of the deal. There's nothing wrong with doing what's right for your career, but in this case 6 months is hardly a lot to ask of a person. And even if it was, you agreed to it. A man is only as good as his word.
What's more important, a new job, or your integrity?

As for the 8hr guy: Why are you guys taking this clown seriously? His posts and profile are pure flame-bait. Ignore him and he'll go away.

Are you nuts? Burn that CFI bridge if I were you! If you lose your XJT job in the future there'll be other places to go/fall back on.

8HR=flame bait. Stop biting on it..

Guys, it's not a matter of legality. It's a matter of keeping his word. Plain and simple. He agreed to 6 months not 30 years. Maybe he shouldn't have, but he did. Your advice for him to leave suggests that you feel his word is worth nothing and that advancement in this industry is priceless. Both are wrong. Fortunately, I think he has more sense than you. It's a sad day when lying for personal gain is so second-nature that none of you even consider it wrong.

It is a sad day your right Bluto, but with the way the industry is right now the fact that he got a call from XJT MIGHT mean he needs to put the integrity on the back burner this time. Normally I would totally agree with what your saying and you for sure sound to be a person of character and thats very admirable.

I like the debate. I have mentioned it to the flight school. They seem to be OK with it as long as I don't keep them in the dark.

I know some of you think I shouldn't have told them but . . . At the very least I will go to the interview if I get one and see what comes of it.

Thanks heaps-
