We currently operate a King Air 300 and are looking to upgrade to a jet. The only problem is that we operate out of high and short airports(4000ft at 6000ft). Is there anything that can do this in cool weather and traveling about 700 miles. Thanks!

jumbo shrimp?...I seriously dont know..

but what are you asking for your KA 300? I was looking to upgrade to that.

My book numbers for an Ultra shows 3860' required using flaps 15 at 10 degrees C for 5000 elevation at a 16000# TO weight which should give you more than enough room for fuel and pax. You might have to interpolate a bit for 6000' but it should work. Not sure what you consider cool temps but it looks like over 10 degrees you have to start reducing weight to make it work.

Without knowing a little more about your mission, it's hard to recommend something specific. How many people, for starters? Looking to buy new or used? Any specific price range?

A Citation Sovereign will carry 8 people and a ton of fuel and bags out of a 4000-foot strip, at 5000-foot field elevation, at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Cessna's Sovereign Page. Prices vary, but ~$15 Million sticks out in my head as a ballpark for a new one.

Dont forget the Citation Xls Good short field capability stand up cabin and APU

The Excel's a good airplane (it's what I'm flying currently), but it won't meet the OP's mission of a 6000-foot-elevation airport, with a 4000-foot runway. It just doesn't have nearly the short-field performance the Sovereign does. A fully-loaded XLS would need 5,490 feet to take off from a field at an elevation of 5,000 feet at 77 degrees F -- the same conditions for which the Sovereign needs only needs 3,980. Even at freezing temp, the Excel would still need over 4000 feet fully loaded. The only way it could do it would be with very little fuel, very cold temps, and only a couple of people.

I don't have a full set of Sovereign charts, so I can't check the OP's original mission of 6,000 feet specifically, but looking at the 5000-foot numbers on Cessna's site, it should be able to do it as long as it's not right at max takeoff weight. (And if he's only going 700 miles, he can leave off quite a bit of fuel to ensure that.)

I believe he said he's "upgrading from a KA 350 to A jet," not that he just "won the Lottery". Used excel @8 mil Vs. new Sovereign @18 Mil and 2 year wait for it to be built. Lightly loaded citation V, ultra or excels will do the trick. If money isnt an option buy a Falcon 900

You may want to visit block times for your 700 mile mission. I doubt a jet will save more than 15 to 20 minutes on this. Maybe the boss's time is worth that much, but you may want to look hard at that. You have the perfect airplane for the mission, unless leg lengths are going to grow past 1,000 miles or you really need more room, you may be making a career limiting move by not putting the brakes on this one.

Hello,

You should take a close look at this one:

Looks like 700 miles, and more, high and even hot will be no problem.

Have fun!

B0001,

How many pax do you usually have on board? There are many planes that would fit this mission. You don't want over kill, but you also don't want to under do the mission either. CJ2+ or CJ3 would fit the mission, plus you could most likely operate both cheaper than the 300 or 350.

Thanks for all the help!! We usually have 5-8 people onboard for the trip. It is a small airport in colorado so it is usually pretty cool in the mornings in the summer. We can use Montrose if it is just way to hot but they perfer the little stip in the moutians. Budget wise we are really looking to stay around 2-5 mil. I heard the Lear 31 works well.?. The 300 works great and I dont think there is a jet that they can "load up" with pax and bags like you can the 300. I am worried about what Flyflyfly said about shooting myself in the foot. Im sure there are plenty of guys out there that have jumped from King air's to light jets and made it look pretty. We do this trip only about 20% of our flying and im not sure that if we did have a jet we would do 1000+ legs. Thnaks again!

King Air owners have a habit of backing up a Chevy Suburban to the plane that is full, can a LR31 do that?

the citation or 31a is probably your best bet

Sounds like you already have the ideal airplane for your mission. If boss wants a shiney jet, he'll have to settle for the other airfield. In all practicallity, a 4000' strip at 6000'msl is just not enough runway for a jet, especially any jet that compete with the B300 for useful load. If boss wants a new airplane, suggest the B350... with the ProLine21, its pretty slick.
