True, it is a remarkable "no **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**, there I was story". I was at the boogie
and jumped the CASA two loads after the invert. As far as I know, no one
was hurt seriously, I understand two were overnighted at the hospital though.
I did see the video and it happened exactly as described. The pilot obviously
did a great job in recovering the CASA ( Carolina's CASA by the way ) before
it got into a flat inverted spin, which would have been what we call a
"bad thing".
Now I am not an NTSB investigator, nor am I from the FAA, not even a rated
pilot, however in my civilian and military job I am a flyer. What we have
to realize here is that "most likely, the stall was caused by skydiver
error (sic)". Every aircraft flying, whether it be fixed or rotor wing, must
maintain an acceptable center of gravity (CG) and an acceptable airspeed in
order to fly. The aircraft slows to make a reasonable exit speed for the
skydivers. In order to do this the pilot puts flaps down so that the wing
will create as much lift as possible. Even as much, when the CG is moved
too far to the rear of the aircraft ( when the floaters, base and divers are
all standing on the tailgate ) the aircraft has a tendency (physics here)
to take a nose high attitude, making the front of the wing nose high, thus
exceeding the critical angle of attack of the wing, and the wing stalls.
Remember your loading limits of these tailgate aircraft when you are planning
the dive!
In this case, disaster was averted. Thank whomever you choose on that one.
In regards to the video. I was told that the footage will make the boogie
video. It was incredible. What was really amazing was that the guy shooting
video was obviously in freefall. When the CASA was doing all this inverted
gymnastics, it stayed with the camera guy. Terminal, on its back for several
seconds before pulling out. Ya had to see it!
