Just curious if any of you ever flew any of the Shorts SD330/360 or SkyVans ?

When I worked for them in the 80's, a lot of the SD330/360 seemed to have been destined for the US but I have yet to actually see one here. I have just seen footage of jump schools using them.

Miss the old days of walking thru the assembly areas for the SD330/360, the wings for the F100 and even the old Canberra's that were in for a refit from the RAF.

Ahhh.. the smell of machine oil !!!

I see a couple of them flying cargo over the sierras in the CA-NV area.
360's I think?

IBC in Miami has a big fleet, cargo, Skyway Enterprises in kissimmee, Fl have at least 6- 360's from American eagle, and at least 1 sherpa based in JVY.

there are three skyvans in naples, FL for mosquito control.

there is always one 330 in TLH, and a 330 in Charlotesville, VA both cargo.

the only pax operator in a 360 in Guam, there a few pax operators in the Carribean, Hawaii has at least three flying cargo between the islands.

awesome airplane! anyone can fly a round airplane!!

Seems to me, that skydiving folklore says there is video of a shorts skyvan that wound up on it's back because too many skydivers were on the tailgate. The video is supposedly taken by someone who was momentarily trapped in the skyvan and rumor has it that this person got out of the plane by crawling on the ceiling to the rear of the plane.

They also said the two pilots were able to recover from this stall. I'm willing to chalk it up to urban skydiving folklore, but I have a feeling that this may have actually happened, based on how many people I have heard it from.

Hmmmm...just did a quick search on Google and found this, I'm going to go look at the NTSB reports and see if there's something to back it up.

Back from Richmond Boogie and here's the best no **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** story. Thirty-two
way Bird organized load with two video planned. Lined up the exit and
stalled the CASA. I got pooped out early with the base. Some guy next to
me didn't make it out early. I exited relative to the plane expecting to
be looking down and was looking straight up. Flipped over, turned around
and saw the CASA flinishing it roll to end up flat on its back with people
thrown all over the sky. People were crawling out the ceiling (a couple
hit the tail). Then it fell into a spiraling dive with people trapped by
the G's but still trying to get out. Lost sight of it but my buddie two
rows behind me couldn't get out until it had recovered to almost level
flight. Lots of bruises, cuts, etc. I heard 3 or 4 to the hospital, one
with a neck injury. I don't know their condition. Good video was taken
but I didn't get a chance to see it before I left.

Anyone know the condition of those hurt the worst? And, will the video be
available on a boogie tape or elsewhere?

I got to see the sights and say I was there without getting hurt. Lucky
this time.

Formation built to about 14! I was close but low.

True, it is a remarkable "no **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**, there I was story". I was at the boogie
and jumped the CASA two loads after the invert. As far as I know, no one
was hurt seriously, I understand two were overnighted at the hospital though.
I did see the video and it happened exactly as described. The pilot obviously
did a great job in recovering the CASA ( Carolina's CASA by the way ) before
it got into a flat inverted spin, which would have been what we call a
"bad thing".

Now I am not an NTSB investigator, nor am I from the FAA, not even a rated
pilot, however in my civilian and military job I am a flyer. What we have
to realize here is that "most likely, the stall was caused by skydiver
error (sic)". Every aircraft flying, whether it be fixed or rotor wing, must
maintain an acceptable center of gravity (CG) and an acceptable airspeed in
order to fly. The aircraft slows to make a reasonable exit speed for the
skydivers. In order to do this the pilot puts flaps down so that the wing
will create as much lift as possible. Even as much, when the CG is moved
too far to the rear of the aircraft ( when the floaters, base and divers are
all standing on the tailgate ) the aircraft has a tendency (physics here)
to take a nose high attitude, making the front of the wing nose high, thus
exceeding the critical angle of attack of the wing, and the wing stalls.
Remember your loading limits of these tailgate aircraft when you are planning
the dive!

In this case, disaster was averted. Thank whomever you choose on that one.

In regards to the video. I was told that the footage will make the boogie
video. It was incredible. What was really amazing was that the guy shooting
video was obviously in freefall. When the CASA was doing all this inverted
gymnastics, it stayed with the camera guy. Terminal, on its back for several
seconds before pulling out. Ya had to see it!

Hey FN FAL,

Skyvan at Lost Prarie MT Boogie in July 1997 -

Big-way formation exit - Skyvan Lead, Twin Otter in L + R Trail.

Jumpers stacked up on tailgate (only 10, yeah right)

Skyvan stalled and broke left over Left trail otter

Jumpers started exiting as Skyvan stalled - they stopped momentarily as the Van rolled over the Otter. Jumpers resumed exiting by running on cieling of now inverted skyvan. Skyvan lost 5000+ ft of altitude.

Incredible Video !!!!!!!!

I'm currently a Shorts 360-300 Check pilot.

The company I work (www.sunshineexpress.com.au) currently operates two Shed's on passenger services throughout southeast Queensland (Australia).

She's not a bad old bus to fly, but it is getting harder to maintain due to shortage of spares.
