Informal poll:

What is your understanding of how to manipulate the switches/valves, etc. of the Scott/Avox mask in a "Smoke in the Cockpit" situation?

I just want to see what people think. . .

Follow the check list.

From what I remember this early in the morning:

Mask on Goggles on
o2 100%
Pull the little thing on the top of the mask to clear smoke from mask/goggles.
Reduce dilution if possible so you don't use it all up!

Coms to Emergency mode.

Follow the check list.

Good idea, but I'm looking for specifically what you turn, twist, pull. There's multiple knobs and valves. Which are you moving to what setting?

To you what does O2 100% mean?

move the ring that goes over the scrren fitting (the big one) on the side. this controls the dilution. If its covering the screen (pushed all the way up) its 100%.

Do you do anything the Emergency knob on the front?

the knob on the bottom? Um yeah, turn it on to start the o2. OR you can just sit and suffocate on the mask until you figure it out. :-) sacasm

Suffocation is bad, I'll give you that. But, you don't need to turn that knob to get O2 out of the mask. Put it on and inhale and O2 comes in.

So, what do people use the "Emergency" setting for?

The emergency function is at your discretion. By selecting this there is a constant flow of oxygen flowing.

Hmmm. I think the memory items call for Emergency for Smoke in the Cockpit.

Funny you brought this up, because in my latter days I Mesaba I pondered this. I never really quite understood the knob that you use to test it. The memory items didn't say to turn it "on". (What were the knob labelings BTW? But it seems that's the only way you'll get oxygen. ??? I'm not very sharp though...

You go to constant flow (emergency) in a smoke situation just in case you don't get a good seal on the mask. I know, stupid. The theory is the constant flow will keep smoke out of the muzzle of the mask while you are putting it on and from that point on. It is just a precaution to guarentee that you don't suck in fumes and smoke. That is how it was explained to me. I could be wrong.

Also, if you don't use the Emergency function, the goggle vent doesn't work.

When the checklist calls for 100%, it's talking about 100% pressure (Emergency setting), and not the diluter screen being set at 100% content.

If you don't believe me, pull out the big nasty AFM that sits next to the captain's seat, or just look at the AOM. Both reference the Emergency setting for smoke and decompression.

I think somewhere along the way, there was a translation error, or the checklist writers got sloppy (hard to believe, right?). Anyway, there's two 100%'s - content and pressure.

I think the checklists want you to go to Emergency. Not to many people would do that. . .

You're right, they don't - but maybe they should.

The Oxygen Selector has "Normal" or "100%" (the screen dealy).

The Emergency Selector has "Off" or "On" 9the knob dealy).
