Anyone have any good or bad input regarding the Senn. HME C25-KAS, the HME 45-KA, or the HME 25-KA? Currently looking to move into something lighter than the David Clarks and thought about getting one of these. Most importantly are they comfortable on longer flights and how good are they for turbo-props? Would greatly appreciate the input. Thanks.

The HME C25-KAS and the HME C25-KA are excellent headsets for the RJ but can't tell you how well they would be for a turbo-prop, but I'd venture to say, they're probably not good for use in a turbo-prop. The HME-45-KA are definitely not good for a turbo-prop and not even any good in the RJ. Invest in some heavyduty 15XLC or 20XLC Lighspeeds for the turbo-prop.

The Sennheiser headsets work well and are more durable than they look. I have used the 25KA series in the ATR, RJ and a pretty wide assortment of General Aviation aircraft. They do not have much passive noise reduction (11db) but it is enough to operate in the RJ without having them even turned on. In GA aircraft I usually don't flip them on until after the climb check because so much noise is cnx that it is difficult to hear anything abnormal during the run up.

With the ANR and the ear cup design, I think the Sennheisers do a little better at reducing noise than the 850's I borrowed to evaluate. But the 850's are slightly more comfortable.

Some turboprops are louder than others. The ATR was pretty quiet and most of the noise is in the lower frequency ranges. Apparently the extra work the headsets do in these frequencies shortens battery life considerably. In the RJ the batteries (when in use) last several weeks to a month. In the ATR you were looking for another set after two, or three, days. You will want good rechargeable AA's, anything over 2100 MAH will work.

For a good price try these guys:

They get trade show demos that look and work like new. I've referred several friends and family members to this place and every headset has looked like new (in fact we suspect they were never pulled out of the box before).

Also be aware that the KA and the KAS series both come with stereo plugs. Some of the turboprops need a 1/4 inch adapter from mono to stereo to work with the Sennheisers. These plugs are available at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc..., for less than $2.00.

I have the 25KA series as well. Very crisp and clear and excellent ANR. I found them at this website: http://www.spinnerspilotshop.com/ for about 525 bucks.

Does anyone know if the intercom in the CRJ will power the ANR? There is a conversion kit from battery to the mic tip power that costs about 30 bucks.

Do you have a link to that? I'd be willing to try that as I've easily spent $30 on rechargeable batteries...

If the CRJ will power them, does the hot mike have to be going? I am guessing the other guys doesn't want to hear the "Shhhhhhhhhh" for three hours.

I assume it would be just like the Telex 850 where it gets the power regardless of the intercom switch position.

I'm not sure if it will power them, I e-mailed the US rep and he said he didn't think so, but doesn't really know until someone tries it. I'd love to save some $ on batteries!

I talked to a rep about it, and he said the Telex 850's use a different technology to power the ANR from the mic tip than the Sennheiser. The aircraft jack has to be wired for it and he said he doubted any airliner had the correct wiring for it. I have the 25 KAS and they work great in both the turboprops and the jets. Much more quiet than the 850's.

I have the 25KA and love them. I used those guys at aviation-headset.com for mine and got factory recond (trade show demos) with full warranty for under $400. Even got a call from them two days after they arrived to make sure I got them and if everything was satisfacotry. Work well in the CRJ, wouldn't know about a turboprop.

The 25 KAS is a great headset for (737,CRJ, etc). I'm not flying a turbo prop now, but I did for over 5 years. Unless you're flying a Q400 I'd say they don't block out enough noise. I used to wear David Clark noise canceling headsets with ear plugs. I still say, "what?" a lot.
