I just picked one up and am generally happy with it in the CRJ, but I keep having to turn off my hot mike. Even though I have the foam on the microphone, it keeps picking up the general hum in the cockpit and passing it on to our ears. Just flew with a captain that always kept his mike hot but his David Clark always cut out the microphone when he wasn't speaking. Is there any way to adjust the gain on the mike? Is mine defective or do they all do that? Anyone with experience with this model that could shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Every time I have flown with someone wearing the Sennheiser, that is EXACTLY what their mike does...gives me a headache unless they shut off their hot mike. I was going to get one until I heard how annoying their mikes were. Bought the Bose instead. Worth every penny.

Just about every headset does that. I've used the Telex 750, Telex ANR, and David Clark ANR.

I've asked this question to many of the captains I've flown with and they all say it just something that happens. Turn off the hot mike or deal with the noise.

Just another way to keep the man down!

I just turn off the hot mike with mine. I've noticed DC's are the worst when the Captain leaves the mike switch on. Telex's are the best along with other Sennheiser's.

Its the Gain. There is a little hole in the mike that is the gain. I dont suggest trying to change it yourself, because it is a very sensitve nut that adjust it the output. Its not made of metal, and strips very easily. If you can take it to some shop, or even back to Sennheizer to get them to adjust it will solve these issues.

Thanks! I was hoping someone would say this. I suspected this but nobody could confim it.

I use the HMEC-25KA's in the CRJ. Here is what you need to do. At cruise flight when you have some time.

Get a little tiny flat blade screwdriver, like the kind you would use to tighten a screw on your glasses. Remove the foam cover over the mic.

Ask to put on the other guys headset so you can hear the mic gain on your -25's Then as you turn the IC switch on/off you can hear the wind noise that the mic is picking up. Now turn the little tiny screw counter clockwise I believe until it gets to the point that you can not hear the difference between on and off. Then hold the mic up to your mouth and speak in to it. Verify that you can hear yourself in the other headset you are wearing. Play with the adjustmet until you get it to where you want.

Yes, most Sennheiser's have their mic gain a little too high, but they, as well as most ALL headsets will have a mic gain somewhere.

Don't try to do this while wearing the TELEX 750's. You won't be able to hear the difference anyway.....

Good luck, the -25's are really nice headsets for the CRJ and half the price and weight of the BOSE.

Do us all a favor and just turn off the hot mike. There is not one single headset that doesn't pick up cockpit noises, Capt snoring, etc. :-) I can't stand it when the guy I'm flying with leaves the hot mike on all the time - keep your grunting and huffing to yourself!!

It worked

I made the adjustment today and it worked great. There's no noise now but I can be heard when I speak. Thanks to those with suggestions. And if I fly with grumpy, I'll make sure to turn off the hot mike. :)
