I am buying the Sennheiser 25 anr for the CRJ cockpit. Please tell me the real facts before I waste any money Please. Thanks.

I have used the HMEC 45 in the RJ and it worked well for me. I would opt for the stereo version because it has a left and right volume control (HMEC 45ka). I used the 25 in a turbo prop and in my opinion it may be more than you need for the RJ. The 45 may cost a little more but provides a more comfortable fit. Try one before you buy one if it is possibe.

The Sennheiser was a great headset -- but not for the CRJ. Its important to remember that ANR technology has not advanced to the point yet where it can cancel high-frequency noise. It works in the low frequency range. It does a terrific job getting rid of engine noise etc... but doesn't do much at all for wind noise, air-conditioning noise, etc.

Those, unfortunately, were the big noise-makers in the CRJ cockpit.

So when I had my Sennheisers, I was using both earplugs and the headsets to get the sound down to a reasonable level.

The CRJ cockpit is very loud for a jet-aircraft. I would recommend an ANR headset which also employs PASSIVE protection i/e covers the ear. Telex and Dave Clark make good models of those as do lightspeed and even Marv Golden.

Obviously the best of the best is the Bose X. Bose has a deal where they'll put $100/month on your credit card interest free. That way you dont have to plunk down the $1000 all at once.

Dont take my word for it though. Next time you're in Cincinnati, drive over to Sporty's Pilot Shop in Clermont County. They'll take out all of the ANR headsets and hook them up to a test-bench so you can try each one of them.

The Bose worked great for me in the CRJ and it works like a DREAM in the Learjet. They're lightweight, comfortable, and -- best of all -- I have no worries about hearing damage as a result of airplane noise.

I only wish I had them back in the 90's when I was sitting between the Garrett sisters in the J31.

Gotta agree with FurloughedAgain. I've had a pair of Telex ANR's and currently fly with BoseX and by far the Bose for me are superior when it comes to all around noise supression/cancellation.

I will say that the few Senheiser (I can't spell) guys I've flown with, approximately half have had earplugs in.

I am very happy with my Sennheisers in the RJ. I still can't figure out why everyone keeps saying that the RJ is loud. Maybe I am already deaf from years of sitting behind a radial. Anyway, the Senns work well for me. Very comfortable.

I'd be willing to bet that the Senns (the 25s, not the 45s that are just overgrown walkman headphones) have higher passive noise correction than the Bose. Especially since Bose doesn't publish their numbers. All I know is that on the occasion that my batteries die on the Senns, I can still hear the radio without cranking it up.

Headsets are a personal thing, just buy it from a place that has a no-hassle return policy. If you already have the Bose, then use it, but I wouldn't suggest spending $1000 on it if you don't have one.

I use the -45 model in the CRJ and love it. Light, comfortable, and quiet enough for me. No complaints (except that the chord gets tangled and twisted easily). I have never used the -25, but a few people I have talked to say they clamp their ears too much. Hard to say, different people like different headsets. I got the -45 almost new on ebay for $350. Good luck...
