Hey people, I am working on a project with a co-worker and wanted to get some opinions. We are developing a self defense course that will be taught in both a classroom and a MD80 Cabin Trainer, do you think that there would be genuine interest in such a course? How much would you pay for a such a course?

Course A would be a "4" hour class to teach break away and control (we were trying to price the class between $100 - $199

Course B would be a "4" hours class and will focus on weapons.

Both courses are taught by a 3rd degrees black belt instructor.

It is geared toward aviation folks & others. As a pilot would you be interested in such a course? Would a Flight Attendent be interested? Anybody?

Before I spend toooooo many hours on this project, please let me know your opinion????

My email address is:

Thanks!

I'm glad somebody is taking the initiative about this. Our company looked into this after 9-11 but at $160 per trainee, they determined that it was cost prohibitive. I interpeted that as your life is not worth $160. Just some basic Akido or JuJitsu moves would do. We not trying to train a new breed of Jedi masters here.

I have a somewhat different take, than what your comment implies (at least to me) I would suggest that yes, your life certainly IS worth more than $160. That said, why would YOU not pay for the training out of your own pocket? Is your life worth less to you, than it is to your employer? Why must we always look for someone else to pay the freight for our own well being, when we are able to do so for ourselves. To me, that just puts the employer in the role of mommy or daddy, looking out for their young 'uns, before they've grown, matured and are able to look out for themselves.

My life to me, is worth millions and millions. I don't think any of my previous employers could, would, or should, pay that premium on my life, or the rest of their thousands of employees. They would all be broke if that were the case. I think we need to take responsibilty for our own well being, and not look to suckle at the breast of big govt or big employers (or small employers)

Don't get me wrong here, I'm 110% on your side. But I think that 4 hours of training will only get people in trouble. False confidence, so to speak. I guess it depends on what kind of training you are talking about, and what the goals are. (If you said 4 years, I'd agree with you-you probably understand what I mean.) I can teach someone how to shoot pretty good in four hours- close range at least- but self defense in four hours??

Like I said "no offense" twards you, it takes a lifetime of devotion, not 4 hours...

Actually I do participate in the martial arts unrelated to flying. And while I understand where you are coming from. However the languange used when it was anounced that "it wasn't worth it" was a little disturbing. I guess you had to be there. I don't see why it would take $160 per person do to what Mike suggests, a 4 hour course to learn some basic moves. Again, we're not trying to produce Jedi Knights here. But I have not investigated the costs of such a program. One of the other pilots, who is much more into this stuff than I am, even offered to hold a class for our FA's at no charge. But the company said no. Why? I know this is hindsight, but even at $160 per person, how much money would the industry have saved on 9-11 if a percentage of the FA's were trained in self-defence? Of course this is all academic.

Our company (AirTran) offers Close Quarters Defense Training courses twice a month or so, for any pilot or FA who wishes to attend. These classes are at no cost to the employee. In addition to the course, the company provides lunch, and as an added incentive to attend, 2 buddy passes. I think the buddy pass deal is a recent addition to intice more participation.
