Second Careers

At the suggestion of Albie, how about everyone posting jobs they or someone they know of do that "dovetail nicely with an airline job."

I'll go first:

-One of our Captains is a relatively succesfull daytrader. (50-60K a year, 5-10 hours a week.) He'll be the first to admit it's high-risk.

-Another one of our Captains has had a few magazine articles published, but said the pay ain't anything to get excited about. More of a hobby.

Simulator instruction fits very well. First it bypasses the " outside flying " and FAA flight time limits nicely since it isn't in an airplane and doesn't count towards flight or duty time. Second, it helps with career job number 1 by keeping you proficient and more marketable in the event of a furlough. It also helps you to network and get to know where the good jobs are in case you need to move on or step up.

I worked for Flight Safety Boeing part time for over three years. Made about $14,000 per year working an average of less than 4 days per month.

My view is that if you are dedicated to aviation and like flying than you should stick with something in the field of flying.

I have bought a couple rental properties recently. So far it's a pretty good side gig. If you can keep your maintaince costs low (no new appliances/roofs ect.) and find reliable renters all you really have to do is cash the checks on the first of the month.

I jumpseated with a captain who was a Grad-level Economics professor at ASU-Tempe.

He graded a semester final on a flight one day...

I just finished a real estate course and I plan to become a realtor full time until I start class at my new airline. Then I will try to do this part time.

This way, If I am out on the streets again, I will have something to fall back on.

9/11 was an eye opener when I realized I had nothing. I plan not to fall into that trap again.
