Does anyone know what are the requirements to be one is?

Are they usually helo pilots only?

Can you still be one even if you are not in the Coast Guard or ANG?

CAP, but there you have to be there a while and work though their BS to make it to fly SAR.

Some law enforcement and fire departments fly search and rescue as well. Most of these hire thier pilots from within. (meaning you are a police officer or firefighter first and then apply to the air division) The vast majority of these are rotor or dual rated positions.
