Here's what happens when you don't properly "NOTAM" an airfield under construction. A lack of communication over in Iraq. Last week one C-23 Sherpas flew into a US operated airfield in Iraq during the day and saw there was construction equipment on the runway. Yet there was no NOTAM (notice to airmen). A trench was being dug in the runway, and it was not marked. Its a long runway and they just landed beyond the construction. They filed a safety hazard report that was immediately forwarded to our higher headquarters and to the Air Force wing based here. Well, it seems the construction continued and still was not marked or NOTAMed or anything. A C-130 landed on the runway the night of the 29th and didn't see the construction. It wound up going through what is now a large pit on the runway. A few pictures are attached. The C-130 was totaled. There were several injuries to the crew and the few passengers that were on board but luckily nobody was killed. Quite the set of failures somewhere in the system regarding this improper construction and no notifications about it.

I don't know all the facts, but that would surely be a bummer when you saw that hole and there was no time to do anything about it.



A pilot could land as an earthquake was occuring, fall into a large crack on the runway, and it would still be due to pilot error since he failed to check siesmograph readings prior to departure.

Besides, I'd say landing in an earthquake showed poor judgement. He should've gone around...

MC-130Hs are pretty rare, not very numerous at all. That plane has lots of nice toys, you can see just a few attached to the plane in various places.

Pretty expensive loss. This isnt your fathers C-130, as the saying goes.

One of the Combat Talon's missions is to fly in at low level at night to insert Special Forces. I'd guess that the dome is some sort of terrain-following radar, or maybe even that imaging radar that can display a real-world picture of what's in front of the airplane.

It's a TF/TA radar...Terrain Following/Terrain Avoidance. Allows the crews to fly into "denied" areas around 100 feet AGL at night to deliver their "customers".

Unfortunately this one was lost doing regular trash hauling. What a mess.

Wasn't one of these lost in Afghanistan, as well? At Max power, max AoA, trying to climb out of a valley in the Hindu Kush, in IMC nonetheless, ended up parking it on a mountainside without loss of life.

Yes you are correct....no one was killed....amazing. It's been a bad few years for the T2 community, however that's tempered with the fact that they've been doing alot of "real world" ops too.

They lost one in Puerto Rico on a training mission a couple years ago, with all aboard lost.

This is not a "trash hauling" airframe. It is a demanding mission and it sucks this happened. Fortunately no one was killed.
