Going to San Juan for a few days and have never spent more than 12 hours before.
I am looking for suggestions for things to do during the day outside of the normal hotel pool/beach.
Are there any good sights to see? Should I rent a car?
Good places to eat? The other half likes good food.

Thanks in advance.

Visit the old fort and rain forest.

El Morro is the old fort. Cool place. While you are in that area, see Old San Juan. Lots of shopping and tourist stuff.
Bacardi factory and tour. Free drinks.

El Yunque is the rain forest. Lots of hiking.

I hear Ponce on the South coast is nice. I've never been.

You can take a ferry from Fajardo on the east coast of PR that will co to Culebra. Culebra has some beautiful beaches. Very quiet and relaxed. You can also jumpseat on Isla Nena I think it is. Caravans. May be some other carriers too.

Luminescent (sp?) beaches. Water glows at night from microscopic organisms in the water. Cool to see.

Go to any local restaurant and you can get chicken, beans and rice. Good stuff. Burger Kings and Taco Makers are everywhere.

It's very nice to have a car. Otherwise you depend on the bus, which is ok for getting around San Juan, but not very dependable for a schedule. There is a lot more to PR than just San Juan.

That's all I can think of for now. Have fun!

If you get over to Aquadilla go to Country Pizza...some of the best pizza I have ever had...plus always some hotties playing pool.

Aquadilla is nice but I have never been to san juan but it is a 60 mile drive I think

Any good locals bars/discos nightlife to reccomend? I'm thinking of going and prefer to avoid the tourist casino/spring break scene.

As someone above mentioned...go to Culebra. Been there a few times and if you like no phone reception, no TV, no newspapers....all but some really nice wide sandy beaches to just yourself in the mornings and late afternoons....with a bar on the beach (Flamenco), thats the place to go. Pretty sporty little airport too.....
