That just happened to be the first time i used a corked bat after 505 home runs, and it just happened to shatter that first and only time. And i'm all natural.

-sammy sosa

He claims he picked it up by accident? What was a corked bat doing anywhere near the freaking dugout anyway?

It's probably debatable what enhancement a corked bat would give to someone who already possesses the power of Sosa, but why even take the chance of ruining your reputation to hit the ball a few extra feet?

I know I will feel a little different about the guy's past performance.

He's a foolish cheater... should have just stuck with the steroids!!

but who cares about baseball any more.

The fans are voting with their wallets since the last strike talks. Just look at the stadium attendance. Even the top teams have many open seats. Cant wait for football season! go titans!

That's the question I have, too.

Sosa says that he used the corked bat for homerun demos. I can see wanting to wow a bunch of kids outside of game time, but I'd make sure that the bat was removed from the field during the game.

This is a big error for Sammy. :(

football....

Yea, i've been having withdrawls of football lately, that i've been playing Madden football on PS2... got my Pat's bulit up...
Its a shame that baseballs fallen apart, but they brought it upon themselves.

Timebuilder, I couldn't pass this up.

Sammy is an example of someone who is NOT young, who cheated.....

Where is BigD? I wonder if he'll want to get in on this....

Just yanking your chain. :)

I think that this could be much more "damaging" than it appears. MLB can wipe off the books many of his accomplisment years "if" there is any inclination or proof that he cheated in any way shape or form. Obviously his integrity will be effected by this latest incident but I think he deserves the opportunity to prove that this was an isolated incident and it was just a mistake.... He is one of if not the strongest hitter in baseball today so I don't think he would need to cork his bat to enchance his ability... We shall see.

Objection, your honor. Counsel is drawing a conclusion based on facts not in evidence. :D

If Sosa purposely did this, then you are correct, but there has been no proof of this. More than likely, he stupidly left the bat on the field, leaving him open to a horrible mistake during the game.

And by the way, he wasn't yet born when I was a kid. At 35, he's a youngster to me. When he was only 13 I was 29, and on the fourth largest rock station in the nation.

So, to me he IS young, and a part of the group of post-1970 school kids.

Good try, though. :D :D :D

Football's Clean

Sammy was wrong and he will be punished. A suspension and a big fine. Something to show the new kids that cheating is wrong. He won't have any homeruns taken away. No way to prove that he used a corked bat during those at bats.

I disagree. Baseball is just a popular as it always has been. Attendance maybe down, but I blame the weather and the economy. Stadiums in Anaheim, New York, Seattle, Boston are packed. I bet many on this board go to games when they're lucky enough to lay-over in a major league city.
Its a shame that baseballs fallen apart, but they brought it upon themselves
How's that?
You guys are implying that baseball is full of cheaters, while football is a clean sport. Please.

Baseball is NOT the American past-time...it sucks!

Here is the dish on the benefits of a corked bat (from sportscenter):

A 1% increase. That's it. A 400 foot homerun just became a 404 foot homerun with the corked bat. A corked bat travels 1.1 mph faster than a non-corked bat.

What is a corked bat doing in the dugout? Well I think it's obvious...to hit homeruns with!:D I think Sosa said that they use corked bats in practice...WTF? Wouldn't you want to practice with what you would use in the game?!

Where is BigD? I wonder if he'll want to get in on this....

I think I will, and make my comment commensurate with my age...

Timebuilder: ppppppppppppppttt! :D :D

Okay,,, if he had "accidentaly" picked up a corked bat, wouldn't the weight be obvious to him? It's been years since I played for my Highschool, but I remeber the specific weight of my bat and could easily tell if I had grapped a different one. I'd have to assume someone of Sosas level would be able to feel a difference.

Overuled!

Hell, I figured at 34 he had to be OLD.

So, Timebuilder, if half way to 68 isn't old, what is? :D
