I hesitate to speak too much on behalf of AMF, but SLC is a nice place to live, and very family friendly. Probably more to do in SLC also.
Folks generally start in the chieftain on the west coast, and work their way to SLC or BIL to get in turbine equipment faster, they're both all turbine bases last I checked.
I could give you route info, but its probably all outdated. The trend, for SLC routes when I was there, was a couple hours a day flight time. Show up at 5AM, get back to the base around 6 to 7PM. The "holy grail" route was a BE99 run down to BUR overnight.
